Hello everyone,

I have an Ikea PAX wardrobe system at home and live with pets—specifically a cat and a dog. I’m wondering about the best way to clean the PAX when pets are part of the household.

I’m not only concerned with removing pet hair but also with cleaning methods that are suitable for the furniture materials, so that coatings or finishes are not damaged. Additionally, I’m interested in how to gently yet effectively remove stubborn scratches or grease stains that might be caused by pets.

Does anyone have experience with specific cleaners or techniques that are especially effective without damaging the wardrobe? Tips on how to prevent or remove pet hair would also be very helpful.

I’m looking forward to your opinions and experiences!

For pet hair on the PAX, I usually use a damp microfiber cloth. This way, hairs can be picked up easily without scratching. For grease stains, a mild dish soap solution helps; apply it with the cloth and then wipe dry.

Scratch marks can be treated with special furniture polish products, but test carefully first.

For cleaning Ikea PAX when you have pets, I recommend:

- Remove pet hair using a vacuum cleaner attachment to avoid damaging the paint or coatings.
- Then use a microfiber cloth lightly dampened with a pH-neutral soap solution for cleaning.
- Avoid aggressive cleaning agents or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the surfaces.
- For grease stains, a mild dishwashing detergent applied with a small amount of water works well.
- Scratches in the paint can be treated depending on their depth with furniture polish or special repair kits. It is advisable to test first on an inconspicuous area.

This way, you protect the surfaces and keep the wardrobe clean.

Basically, it is important to tailor the cleaning of the IKEA PAX specifically to the material used. The PAX fronts usually consist of a painted or laminated surface, which is sensitive to aggressive cleaning agents and mechanical stress.

Step-by-step cleaning procedure for households with pets:

- First, remove pet hair using a vacuum cleaner attachment. A brush attachment can help minimize pressing the hair further into the surface.

- Then prepare a solution of warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap. Make sure to apply the water only lightly so that no water seeps into the edges or joints, which could cause damage.

- Use a soft microfiber cloth to wipe the surface. Stubborn dirt, such as grease from pet skin contact, can be gently removed this way.

- Do not wait too long to dry after cleaning to avoid water spots. It is best to immediately dry by rubbing with a clean, dry cloth.

- For visible scratches, furniture care or repair kits specifically designed for painted surfaces often help. Use only products with good quality ratings and exercise caution during application, as incorrect use may worsen the appearance.

- It is worthwhile to regularly treat the furniture with anti-dust cloths to create a layer that repels hair and dust.

One last important question is: How deep are the scratches and where exactly are they located? This can significantly influence the recommendation for repair products. Also, how often do you clean the piece of furniture per week? The frequency of cleaning likely affects its condition.

Thanks for the details, that sounds very reasonable. The scratches are rather superficial and located on edges where I often see the cats climbing. I will look for a repair kit that is specifically suitable for this.

I had suspected that since the material seems somewhat delicate.

I clean about once a week, especially the surfaces, as the pets often stay there and leave hair behind.

What do you think about antistatic sprays? Do they affect the furniture material in any way, or is it better to be cautious?

Antistatic sprays can be interesting for furniture care, but they should be used carefully. Many of these products contain solvents or substances that may cause unexpected reactions on painted or coated surfaces—such as discoloration, residues, or even sticky layers.

If you want to use an antistatic spray, I strongly recommend testing it first on an inconspicuous area and waiting to see how the material reacts. There are also special antistatic wipes for furniture, which are often less aggressive.

Additionally, antistatic products are more of a cosmetic measure. They can sometimes help with pet hair, but without regular cleaning, hair cannot really be reduced.

For a household with cats and dogs, you might try to minimize pet hair through preventive measures, such as air purifiers, regular brushing of the animals, or furniture covers that are easier to clean.

However, thorough cleaning with mild products remains the more reliable method.
