Prices on the internet are often noticeably lower than what you pay, for example, at furniture stores. However, I think some items are not really suitable for online ordering. For example, I am a bit cautious when it comes to sofas because you can't test how they feel for sitting or lying on. Other items like dining tables and matching chairs seem less critical, and lamps are hardly an issue at all. You can always make a wrong choice and then want to return the product.
Do you know any good online furniture stores that are generally customer-friendly, especially when it comes to returns, so that the process is hassle-free?
What are good brands for sofas and dining room furniture? Or how can I know if the quality of dining tables with chairs is right without having seen or touched them beforehand?
I am also interested in ordering flooring and tiles online.

We will order the bathroom cabinets online.
We ordered our dining table from a well-known furniture retailer online after the local stores refused to match the price from their own online shop.
Small items like networking equipment and electronics are generally purchased online.
We ordered our sofa from the furniture store where we also ordered our kitchen. The price was reasonable, and it was not cheaper online.

Sebastian793 Jun 2016 09:20I have just ordered our sink online – otherwise, (almost) everything related to the electrical and network fine installation.
We bought the sofa and armchair at the furniture store, the kitchen will be custom-made by the cabinetmaker, and my sister made the TV stand.

We order a lot of stuff online... but I don’t first go to the specialist store to get advice and then order online. I think that’s pretty unfair.
When I do go in person, I also make a purchase there.
For the house, we got almost all of the following from the internet:
- Electrical supplies
- Bathroom fixtures
- Various fittings and accessories
- Refrigerator and other kitchen appliances, including white goods
- Ventilation system
- Air conditioning system
Lamps, on the other hand, came from furniture stores and similar places.
For example, with our new dining room, I did go to a furniture store and managed to negotiate a 40% discount off the marked price, which was even 80% off the recommended retail price (RRP).

When it comes to furniture, buying online in the higher price range is not easy. Many furniture pieces are sold through large chains (e.g., Musterring), where you can hardly find them cheaper anywhere else. Some furniture items are also not allowed to be sold at a lower price (e.g., Stressless). With "no-name" brands or direct sales, the price difference can be significant. I no longer buy from these large chain networks because a large part of the cost just disappears without any added value. I prefer to buy directly and know that at least a small part of the expensive money actually goes into the product. A Stressless chair or sofa is a top-quality piece and lasts forever. We currently have a Hjort Knudsen sofa, where there is no middleman – the furniture dealer orders directly.
Regarding the internet in general:
- Lamps are much cheaper online, often sold by the dozen
- Bathroom furniture is available online with substantial discounts (cabinets, etc.)
- Pleated blinds are sold online for about half the price compared to retail stores

I buy almost everything I have a concrete need for online: furniture, lamps, small parts, tools, electrical appliances, clothing, shoes, plants, even my cars (I have never test-driven one)...
Before making a major purchase, I of course inform myself as thoroughly as possible, but usually only online, not in physical stores. After the purchase, however, I am satisfied with what I have and don’t spend ages fussing over things I don’t like.
The only thing I (still) don’t buy online is groceries.
That doesn’t mean I don’t visit hardware stores, furniture shops, Ikea, or similar places. But there, I only make impulse purchases.
