Hello everyone,

I have been an IKEA customer for many years and finally moved in with my girlfriend in January 2008. We purchased our complete apartment furniture from IKEA in December 2007, including the Kramfors sofa with brown leather.

I have receipts for all purchases except for the sofa. The sofa was delivered by a freight company and paid for in cash on delivery. I assume we did not receive a receipt from them. I wasn’t at home during the delivery, only my girlfriend was, and since we were quite busy and the sofa had to remain packed in the apartment for about 14 days, I might not have paid attention.

Now I have the same issue as others with this sofa: the leather is damaged. I have already contacted IKEA, but they don’t seem to be able to find any purchase documentation. They are also unsure which freight company delivered the sofa. I do know that the company that delivered our other furniture did not deliver the sofa.

What should we do now? We ordered the sofa on the last day of a 20% promotion in December 2007 at the IKEA store in Ludwigsburg. It was delivered in early January 2008.

Can anyone help or give me some advice? The sofa is a corner sofa consisting of two two-seater sections and a corner piece, plus an ottoman. The price was around 2000€ (about 2000 USD). It was paid for in cash upon delivery.

Thank you very much in advance…

Damn, I’m really sorry for you..

I think without a receipt you can’t do anything anymore.. just like in any other store in the world. With a receipt, a regular customer has a 3-month return period. As a family member, even forever!
Unlimited exchange and return policy
Think it over, try it out, test it – as long as you want.

That’s what IKEA offers for unused goods with original packaging and a valid receipt with IKEA FAMILY number (excluding discounted items, custom-made countertops, and plants).

But Ikea should be able to reproduce the purchase receipt, right? Or not...

I do think it is definitely possible. But then IKEA would probably need a dedicated department to handle this for 10,000 customers a day (and even more on Saturdays) to manage purchase receipts for everyone who has lost their proof of purchase.

I really wonder how they can require that. No matter which furniture, electronics, or kitchen store I have items delivered from, I am always required to check the goods and only then sign the delivery note... and you ALWAYS receive a receipt. If the shipping company "forgot" to provide one at that moment, I think it was your girlfriend’s responsibility to ask for it afterwards.

Still, I believe you still have a chance if you go to your local IKEA in person and explain the situation. Be persistent and mention that you have heard the KRAMFORS sofas seem to have quality issues. Don’t call or write letters—go to the store yourself and don’t let them send you away with a customer service number.

I have already been to the IKEA store in Ludwigsburg and calmly and politely explained the issue. The helpful staff member immediately told me that this problem is known, but without a proof of purchase, she could not do anything.

Then I contacted IKEA by email. At first, this caused a lot of confusion, but eventually a representative called, saying that they could reproduce the receipts based on the purchase date or period and the customer’s name.

That sounded very promising. So I gave them my name, and to be cautious, also the names of my girlfriend and my mother. We also provided all variations of our addresses.

After two weeks, I received a call: "We couldn’t find anything!" – "You didn’t make any purchases with us during that period!" During that period, I spent about €10,000 (approximately $11,000) only at IKEA Ludwigsburg, including €5,000 (around $5,500) paid in cash, €3,000 (about $3,300) through 0% financing, and the sofa was a Christmas gift from my mother, which was paid for directly to the delivery driver.

The representative then became somewhat unfriendly and said, "No receipt, no exchange." He couldn’t even tell me the name of the logistics company that delivers IKEA Ludwigsburg’s ordered items, since the delivery service for stock items in the IKEA store is different and can track when they delivered to me.

If I knew the other delivery company, I could inquire directly, but apparently, deliveries are handled by Hermes. However, I still don’t know which local logistics company is responsible.
