Good evening

Our hardwood floor (Canadian maple) was recently installed and sealed by a professional company. The floor seems very sensitive to us and looks rather dull. Could this be due to poor sealing? Our parents have had hardwood flooring for over 20 years – but it’s oak. That floor is much less scratched and still shines.

Did they use better sealants in the past? (I’ve heard they contained a lot of solvents and therefore aren’t used much today, but they were supposedly better?!)

I would appreciate any advice, as this floor should last for several more years.

Hello,

Today, parquet sealing is often water-based, but in terms of hardness, it hardly differs from the solvent-based sealants commonly used in the past. There are differences in gloss levels between sealants; the choice of sealant is important—options include matte, satin (silk matte), glossy, and high gloss. Satin is usually preferred as it provides some shine without being too sensitive.

If the parquet scratches too easily, it could mean that the coating process was not done properly or the wrong type of lacquer was used. This should be addressed. I consider it sensible to always apply at least three layers of sealant, and after the final coat, a maintenance treatment should be carried out.
