Hello,

We are now facing the question of which flooring to choose for our basement. Unfortunately, tile installers are very expensive. When comparing prices, we found that using 10 euro DIY store tiles would end up costing about the same as installing an inexpensive light oak parquet. But is parquet really a good idea for the basement? (Our basement is a waterproof concrete shell and connected to a ventilation system.) Thank you for your advice.

It is basically a basement living area, ceiling height after screed: 235 cm (7 ft 9 in), underfloor heating. Used as a utility room, cloakroom and ironing room, as well as a large storage and hobby room.

Why not?

How will the basement be used?

Because using parquet flooring for that purpose would be like casting pearls before swine...

It’s basically a finished basement, as we now know. Hardwood flooring is the least you should consider, but don’t waste premium materials there. I would go with hardwood. But I also don’t like tiles... Others have different opinions, so you have to choose what you like—and what’s affordable. That brings us back to square one.

Using the space as a utility room, cloakroom, ironing room, storage room, or for unspecified hobbies... in my opinion, parquet flooring is not the right choice for these purposes.

Correction: The utility room will, of course, be tiled, but the flooring in the rest of the house is still undecided.

Noble things are going to waste.
I can hardly imagine that it would really cost the same. If so, then of course parquet. But in your place, I would ask around among friends or in some club to see if someone could tile your basement. Often there are cheaper offers, and you can get the tiles from the hardware store...
