Hello,
I probably have a simple question for the community. I plan to install a video doorbell system in our new build. There should be one monitor on the ground floor and one on the upper floor. The purpose is simply to see who is at the door and decide whether to open it or pretend no one is home.

I have already started researching online to see how this can be done as a DIY project because I think having an electrician do it might be too expensive. The contract includes a basic doorbell system with a chime.

What I’m interested in is what exactly I should tell the company regarding which cables to install, where, and how, so I can handle the rest myself.

A door-opening function is not absolutely necessary, since if I want to speak to someone or open the door, I can just go to the entrance. The main entrance door has fingerprint access for the family.

Maybe some of you can also recommend systems.

Thank you very much for your time and help.

Of course, you could opt for a very expensive solution from the usual suspects like Siedle, Behnker, Elcom, Gira, and others.

For me, around €1000 (about $1100) for the video function is too expensive and not very interoperable. That’s why I’m going to install a Hikvision IP camera (~€100 / ~$110) at the front door. Indoors, I can then display the video triggered by the camera, the doorbell, or anything else I want on a wall-mounted tablet, or on a PC, TV, or other device. With the right app and intercom system, it’s also possible to have audio communication and unlock the door.

Hello SirSydom, I am facing the exact same issue. Could you possibly describe in more detail how you integrated the Hikvision system so that the video pops up when the doorbell rings?
Thanks.

This works simply through the motion detection function of the camera... meaning movement is detected -> image appears on the monitor

Thanks, Mycraft! I'm just not quite sure how the monitor/tablet receives the signal to display. Do you have a home server behind it, or does it work via an app?
