Hello,
maybe you can help me or share your experiences.
Last week, we received quotes for windows and exterior doors.
Originally, we expected to be offered aluminum exterior doors. However, they also provided optional PVC (uPVC) doors, which are significantly cheaper.
I’ve heard different opinions from various experts. Some say it’s just a matter of appearance, while others argue that aluminum is definitely preferable due to security, insulation, and other factors.
At first glance, if it’s only about appearance, I could live with a PVC door given the price difference (about 2500€ per door). We actually need two doors because we have a separate entrance to our office area.
Who has a PVC exterior door or can share the pros and cons?

Caspar202013 May 2016 16:30By the way, it is absolutely out of the question to connect safety-relevant devices to the Wi-Fi.
For example, the ability to open doors or windows, or to control the heating.
There is basically no one who changes their Wi-Fi passwords every 2–3 days.

I would like to revive this thread as we are now facing the decision of choosing a new front door. Generally, I’m wondering which material you have chosen.
I have a quote for an aluminum door from Köster (BFD light) and a uPVC door from Rodenberg. Both doors have similar features and cost about the same. Does this mean—since aluminum doors are usually more expensive than uPVC doors—that the aluminum door is relatively cheap, or the uPVC door is overpriced compared to its value?
I understand that general statements can only be made to a limited extent. Are there any tendencies?

knalltüte14 Dec 2020 22:15Hi, disturbing the peace here as well... 😎
If all goes well, I’ll have photos of installed Köster aluminum doors (MS 08) in the next few days.
We looked at several options and found these to offer a good price/performance ratio for the desired features (motorized lock, fully overlapping leaf on both sides, etc.). We also liked the roller hinges, escutcheon plates, and so on. There were promotional doors with an additional motorized lock.
Two doors now cost 7472€ including installation and VAT.
The offered plastic doors mostly had worse U-values, but since the total door area is only about 5m² (54 ft²), this is negligible. However, the plastic doors generally looked “cheaper” (well, they were). Acceptable plastic doors for us started at nearly 2K. With extras added, it would have almost reached 3K. Furthermore, the aluminum front door is available in the same RAL color, and since aluminum-to-aluminum matches better visually with the windows...
I also had the impression that aluminum doors are more stable (they don’t “wobble” during quick movements).

I apologize for disturbing the peace of the dead...
Intuitively, I also lean towards aluminum. Although we have uPVC windows with a wood finish and the uPVC door can be supplied with the same design (foil), I think the windows and the front door are two different “objects.”
Additionally, I can imagine that the front door’s design could be aligned with the interior doors with glass (which I already showed in the house pictures thread).
For Köster, I would choose BFD. I’m just wondering where the power connection needs to be for doors with motorized locks, etc.
I’m also curious if smartphone control including a camera is optionally available. Apparently not from Köster themselves.

knalltüte14 Dec 2020 23:37Hi, the power connection was shown to us; I believe it is installed inside, roughly halfway up on the side with the hinges. We are combining the motorized lock (auto-tronic) with a doorbell system (Turm.tech) that includes a camera, doorbell, and fingerprint scanner (optional modules with keypad, etc., are also available).

hampshire15 Dec 2020 00:05We decided on Gaulhofer aluminum front doors in blue, green, and red, each equipped with a round window. Of course, uPVC doors also work; we had them in our terraced house for 18 years without any problems.
