Annsterdam24 Jan 2018 15:01Hello everyone,
I’m new here and haven’t been active in forums before. I hope I’m posting this topic in the right place.
We are currently planning our house with a double garage. Behind this double garage, there is a workshop, so the total exterior size of the garage area is 6 x 9 meters (20 x 30 feet). Now the question is, what kind of base should we use for the garage? Initially, we wanted a concrete slab with an industrial coating. However, the downside of this is that water from wet cars wouldn’t be able to drain off properly. Also, according to our construction company, we should budget up to €7000 for the concrete slab for this area, which seems like quite a lot to us. Therefore, we are considering paving instead. But we don’t think it looks very good. Somehow, the garage then feels more like an outdoor space. In the workshop, we also foresee the issue that if a screw falls on the floor, it might be difficult to find again. What are your thoughts on this topic? Do you have any tips for us or perhaps other alternatives?

Annsterdam24 Jan 2018 15:15The garage will be built with masonry.
I am currently building a very similar combination of carport with garage and an attached storage room/workshop. However, it is a timber frame construction on point/strip foundations.
The garage and carport will be paved later along with the yard. The storage room will be covered with 40x40cm (16x16 inches) paving slabs with minimal chamfer. For the 6x3m (20x10 feet) area, I did not want to install a separate concrete slab and surface finish.

I have a screed floor in the garage, which I then coated myself with two-component epoxy paint. It is really very durable and doesn’t get stains even from car tires. It also still looks good and didn’t cost 400€. The area is similar to yours. Regarding the drain, isn't a slight slope enough?

Annsterdam25 Jan 2018 20:56How is this done with screed? That means without a concrete slab? Basically, for me as a layperson, is concrete poured directly onto the bare ground? :-?
