Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit, which is standing on a laminate floor. When heavily loaded—such as when I fill the shelf with books or other heavy items—the KALLAX seems to slowly slide across the laminate. This is quite annoying and potentially dangerous because it could eventually tip over.

My questions are:

- Why does the shelving unit slide on smooth laminate flooring, even though it is relatively sturdy?
- Are there proven methods or materials to prevent the KALLAX from slipping on the floor?
- What is the best way to ensure long-term stability on laminate without damaging the floor or the furniture?

I look forward to your experiences and advice. Thank you in advance!

Hello Sikeo62,

first of all, your problem is quite common. Although the KALLAX is built solidly, laminate flooring provides a smooth and often slippery surface, especially if the furniture does not have non-slip feet.

An effective solution is to use anti-slip pads, which can be placed under the feet or directly under the furniture. These are available at hardware stores or online and are made of rubber or another grippy material. They significantly increase traction and prevent unwanted movement.

Alternatively, you could use felt gliders, but these tend to make sliding easier rather than preventing it. Therefore, they are not suitable for your issue.

It is important to check the pads regularly, as they can wear out over time. When loading the furniture heavily, additional anchoring, such as wall mounting, can also help prevent tipping over.

Exactly that! 🙂 I had a similar issue with my KALLAX, and anti-slip pads were a total game changer! These small rubber pads are super easy to apply and really keep everything from sliding around.

What also helped me was securing the shelf with a non-slip mat under the laminate. But be careful, as moisture and dirt can get trapped underneath, so it’s best to check regularly.

And don’t worry: the problem is actually quite solvable, so keep your head up and good luck with it! 🙂

Hello Sikeo62,

I would like to revisit the basics, as they are often underestimated. The sliding of the KALLAX shelf unit on laminate flooring mainly happens because the contact surface is very smooth and friction is low. When heavy loads are placed on the shelf, a force can act that moves the furniture sideways.

These are therefore indeed the first and most important step.

Additionally, you might consider slightly roughening the contact surface of the shelf or attaching thin rubber edging strips to the underside. This will further increase grip.

If the shelf is very tall and heavily loaded, I also strongly recommend wall mounting: both to prevent tipping over and to keep it secured in position, even if it is subjected to minor bumps.

Can you tell me how high the shelf is loaded and whether wall mounting would be possible?

Thanks for the hint, Ramon4. The shelf is about 1.5 meters (5 feet) tall and fully loaded with books and binders – estimated around 30-40 kg (65-88 lbs). It stands fairly freely, not directly against a wall, but I could modify it so that wall mounting becomes possible.

Would you recommend definitely securing the shelf to the wall, even if the anti-slip pads hold well? How stable are the pads for long-term use?

Also, is there any way to retroactively add rubber or similar material to the KALLAX feet, or is using pads the only option?
