Hello everyone,
I have a problem with our fireplace. The fire regularly dies down even when the fireplace door and windows are open. So it can't be due to a lack of air. However, sometimes the fire flares up again quickly. I also find that the fire burns unevenly, and I can clearly hear air whistling through the chimney.
What could be causing this?
Thank you for your advice.

Hello,
We often notice a chimney smell, but I believe that is a separate issue. We experience this smell when the chimney is burning and I turn on the fan in the bathroom. No window is open at the time. Still, there is a negative pressure inside the apartment, and air is drawn in through the chimney. This is something I just can’t explain.
Best regards

Hello Nina,
I suspect that the primary air, meaning the direct air through the ash grate, is set too high. Now the question arises: Does your fireplace have primary and secondary air?
It is always difficult to give a remote diagnosis, but the fireplace is drawing too much air.

Richard-121 Oct 2014 15:08Please do not use this wood stove any longer, as it is life-threatening. You must call the chimney sweep and explain the issues. Combustion air must be able to flow in, and in sufficient quantity. However, this is the problem here: the combustion gases are being drawn back into the room.
This is a serious danger to you and your family.
Best regards

Annegret-125 Oct 2014 11:48Hello,
It seems the chimney sweep missed quite a few things here. To me, the chimney is not operational like this. So please contact the chimney sweep quickly and inform them before something worse happens.
