Hello everyone,

who has experience with the combination of a centralized mechanical ventilation system, a fireplace, and an exhaust hood for the kitchen?

Is that generally possible?

Currently, we have an exhaust hood and a fireplace, and we only needed to install a contact switch on the window so that the exhaust hood only operates when the window is tilted open.

What additional measures would be required with a mechanical ventilation system?

That always depends on what the chimney sweep requires. But in principle, you need to ensure that no negative pressure is created inside the house when the fireplace is in use. In other words, mechanical ventilation should be off; or mechanical ventilation exhaust lowered and supply air raised; or mechanical ventilation exhaust off and supply air on.

In principle, this is possible; it must be coordinated with the ventilation specialist, the chimney builder, and the local district chimney sweep. It is somewhat more complex during the planning phase but then runs smoothly. For example, our fireplace has its own air supply and is independent of the room air.

Take the fresh air supply for the fireplace from outside. This way, you won’t have to make any complicated technical adjustments.

But only if it can be 100% ensured that nothing can escape from the chimney.

And even then, it depends on the chimney sweep. For example, we had a certified chimney system (of course with outside air supply) and a mechanical ventilation with heat recovery system. However, since the ventilation system could not automatically shut off in case of a fault (extracting more air than was supplied from outside), a differential pressure monitor still had to be installed.
