Hello everyone,

I am currently building our terrace.
What concerns me right now is the transition from the terrace to the living room. The height difference will be about 40 cm (16 inches) once the terrace is finished.

How should I install a staircase there?
It should be added that we have an external thermal insulation composite system (ETICS) around the building.

I was planning to build formwork and cast the stairs solidly in concrete, then tile them.

But how do I handle the transition at the ETICS?

Should I cut out the insulation under the terrace door, place a thin polystyrene sheet there, and then pour the concrete?

Because there definitely has to be a gap between the house wall and the concrete stairs since the materials will expand and contract.

Best regards

Cutting Insulation = Thermal Bridge

When the external thermal insulation is cut out, a thermal bridge forms at the contact point between the concrete step and the foundation slab. This is not recommended.

I took a look at the photos from your construction blog. It appears that the foundation slab is not insulated at all. Was the frost protection beam excavated afterward and insulated down to the base, or does the external thermal insulation system (ETICS) simply end at the soil, as shown in the photos?

Hello,

no, the external thermal insulation composite system (ETICS) ends somewhere in the ground. In the photo, it might look like it only reaches the soil surface, but in reality, about 40 cm (16 inches) of fill was added around the house. The splash guard is not directly attached to the ETICS; there is a 4 cm (1.5 inches) thick polystyrene board between them.

The terrace was compacted, then approximately 30 cm (12 inches) of crushed stone was applied and compacted, followed by the gravel. Here too, the ETICS is located somewhere in the soil.

This would mean that the concrete staircase would (if I cut out the ETICS) partially rest on it.

How else should I build the staircase? By now, due to the gravel and 4 cm (1.5 inches) thick boards, I have come close enough to the terrace door that I no longer need a step, although it results in a larger step up. But it would be nicer to have a step.
