Hello everyone,

I need your creativity. In the next few days/weeks, we will finally have our terrace built after 3 years.
I used to be happy with just one or two pots, but now that I’ve gotten into gardening, I want to add more color around the terrace.

Our terrace is quite large (5 x 9 m (16 x 30 ft)) and will have light gray tiles with a wood pattern. I’m attaching some pictures.

Right now, I’m a bit unsure how to add a nice flower bed. I’ve thought about placing two dark gray raised planter boxes at the large free corner, arranged at a right angle.
I would like to plant thyme, lavender, and maybe my small willow shrub (Salix).

My husband doesn’t want a flower bed integrated into the terrace surface, so I would have to add it outside the terrace.

Please help me!

Oberlach! Are you really calling for help from another man? Seriously though, the corner raised bed option is great, would fit nicely, and isn’t set in stone. You can change the dimensions and the raised bed anytime. Visually, I think it looks good! We ourselves have two raised beds, which are perfect especially for herbs, edible flowers, and so on.

If you want something flexible at first, this might be an option for you. I saw it a while ago in a furniture store and thought it was quite reasonable for the price. It’s not a fully functional raised bed, but rather a raised planter with a water reservoir.

Perhaps my suggestion is coming a bit late, but planters made of Corten steel with a rust effect would definitely complement the large rusty iron ring on your terrace. Hornbach offers various designs, and they are still fairly affordable there. They are extremely durable.

A willow doesn’t fit at all in a raised terrace bed with lavender and thyme. Both prefer sunny, hot, and dry conditions, definitely not too much water.
A willow likes it moist. How large do you want it to grow? You have a great big area, a large tree would look nice there… I would love to have one too.

The willow would have its own corner and be kept relatively small. In other words, it would remain a small shrub. No taller than 1 m (3 feet 3 inches), but it could hang downwards.

The terrace is now finished for the time being. Now I can calmly explore options. I have also considered raised bed planters like those from Keter. My husband is keen to build me raised beds. I'm just unsure whether I would prefer them to be movable or permanently set into the ground.
