ᐅ Should You Sow Grass Seed in March or Wait?

Hello everyone,

This weekend, my plot will be covered with 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) of topsoil and leveled.
I’ve been reading more and more that seeding should only be done when nighttime temperatures are above 10°C (50°F). That means I would have to wait until the end of April.
My question is, since I cannot change the schedule:

How long can the topsoil be left like this before weeds start to spread?
Is it okay to wait a month without having to go after weeds with a rake afterwards, or should I just start immediately with rolling and seeding?

Best regards,
Mateo

The cardboard gets heavy at 500 m² (5,382 ft²) 🙂

I'm a bit annoyed now that the filling won't be done until a month later.

Does it actually help to rake over it once a week to reduce weed growth?

Just accept the weeds. Most of them will disappear on their own if you mow regularly.
At the moment, sowing probably won’t make much difference. The soil is still cool and the nights are cold. It doesn’t help much if you only get 15°C (59°F) during the day. See this as an opportunity for the soil to settle a bit before sowing. If you happen to have a cistern, watering can help with this. Before sowing, just lightly loosen the surface with a rake and smooth out any holes or bumps.

The packaging from the furniture store easily covers that. Don’t you also need to buy furniture? 😀

We've been living here for half a year now, and the furniture is all worn out.
Yes, definitely, and even after a mild breeze, I find all my neighbors right outside my door.

I would sow now, the chances are quite good, and you can always reseed spots later if needed. It's better than giving weeds four weeks of free growth. You have to expect some weeds anyway; personally, I hardly do anything. I only pull out thistles and occasionally dandelions, and leave the rest. Bumblebees love clover, and moss provides a lovely surface to walk on.

The first question is, what do you mean by receiving topsoil and it being leveled? Does a digger come and scrape it off? That still isn’t the same as a fine grade level. You will still have to do quite a bit of work yourself with a rake and shovel. And if the “topsoil” (a lot of junk is sold as topsoil) is sticky, you can forget about it unless you add some loose material on top.

But back to the original question: we are in the sunny southwest and sowed at the end of April. That worked well. In my opinion, March is too early; you need a soil temperature above 10°C (50°F).
