Hello everyone,

I would like an external sliding door with sound insulation to separate the living/dining area (with open kitchen) from the hallway (with open staircase). The door should be 1m (3.3 ft) wide, see attached photo. What options and suppliers are available for such doors? Has anyone had something like this installed here? I look forward to any tips or advice.

So, which wall should it run along?
If the door panel overlaps the frame, a rather bulky construction would be needed to effectively reduce noise. In my view, an overlapping sliding door conflicts with both soundproofing and noise reduction.

Sliding doors and soundproofing are somewhat tricky. Definitely choose a heavy wooden design rather than glass.

We installed an old heavy sliding door (it used to be a laboratory door). Back then in the lab, it had a bottom track – we don’t have that. Nevertheless, it is far from airtight.

For soundproofing, you need to seal it hermetically. Soundproof doors have a sealing lip at the bottom that closes the air gap under the door.
How you would achieve this with a sliding door... it might be possible, but it would definitely be extremely complex and expensive.

Use a regular door, as shown in the floor plan.

Thanks for all the ideas so far.

I marked it in red. The old door shown is, of course, to be replaced by the sliding door. The reason: the door is always open anyway (this passage is used very frequently) and the door would just be in the way. For my wife, removing and rehanging the door (my crazy suggestion) when needed (for example, when the kids upstairs are noisy) is not a solution. For me, sound insulation when needed is quite important. So now we are looking for a good solution.
