Hello everyone,

I recently started installing the doors of our Ikea Metod kitchen system and noticed a problem that can be quite annoying in everyday use: some of the doors do not close completely silently, which significantly reduces user comfort. This is especially bothersome in open-plan kitchens or when there are children in the house, as the constant rattling and slamming of the doors can be unpleasant.

My question to the community: How can the doors of the Ikea Metod system be adjusted or modified to close almost silently? Are there specific techniques for adjusting screws or hinges, or would it be advisable to retrofit dampers or soft-close mechanisms (if available)?

It is important to me that the solution is not only effective but also as simple as possible to implement, without having to completely remount the doors. Who has experience or tried-and-tested tips for achieving a quiet and pleasant operation with Metod doors?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Hello Victorpin,

Your concern is completely understandable, as Metod doors come from the factory with a basic soft-closing feature that does not always fully prevent noise.

Basically, you should adjust the hinges so they are properly aligned and the door stops flush with the cabinet frame. Often, an optimal fit can be achieved by using the adjustment screws on Metod hinges (usually one screw for depth, one for side-to-side, and one for height adjustment). The depth adjustment especially affects how firmly and smoothly the door closes.

If there is no built-in soft-close mechanism, you can retrofit one or install small damping cushions separately. Ikea offers special soft-close hinges for Metod fronts that are relatively easy to swap out. Alternatively, there are self-adhesive bumpers that you can stick inside the cabinet to cushion the closing action.

It is recommended to fully utilize these adjustment options before making more extensive modifications.

If you need more specific adjustment tips, just let me know.

Hello Victorpin,

I have been working with Ikea systems and their optimization for a while now, especially regarding comfort and durability. I would like to respond in detail to your questions, as I have several Metod kitchens equipped with soft-close hinges myself.

First of all, it is important to understand that the standard Metod hinges without soft-close are not particularly quiet; they can even be quite loud when slammed shut. The doors close quickly and without cushioning, which matches your problem.

Step 1: Check the hinges and alignment
- Make sure the hinges are properly mounted on the cabinet side and not loose. Even slight play can cause rattling.
- Using the three adjustment screws (for side, height, depth), you can align the doors so they close smoothly and evenly without sticking.

Step 2: Retrofit soft-close
- Ikea offers its own set for retrofitting soft-close hinges on Metod, which you can easily replace. This is definitely worthwhile for increased comfort and noise reduction.
- Alternatively, there are universal soft-close dampers that can be installed in the hinge area. However, these tend to be a bit fiddly to install and often do not fit perfectly.

Step 3: Add additional buffers
- For heavier or larger doors, it may make sense to attach extra bumpers or foam pads to the door frame or cabinet to further reduce impact noise.

An important note: When retrofitting soft-close, make sure to use the original Ikea soft-close hinges. Other models may differ in weight and might not fit perfectly.

If you need tips for the actual installation or photos of the hinge setup, I can help in more detail. It would also be interesting to know how well your doors are currently adjusted, as this strongly affects the impact of any modification.

Best regards!

I can confirm that. Just replace the hinges, and the doors close very quietly and smoothly.
