Hello everyone,

I recently purchased a Billy shelf from IKEA and unfortunately noticed some unpleasant scratches on the shelves. Since these are light-colored particle boards with a foil coating, I’m wondering: how can these scratches be professionally sealed to prevent further damage and protect the surface as inconspicuously as possible?

I’m looking for a method or product that is specifically suited for the sealed surface of Billy shelves. It’s important to me that the solution is not too complicated to apply and provides a long-lasting result. Has anyone had experience or recommendations on the best way to treat such scratches?

Thanks in advance for your tips!

Hello Jonpin4,

First of all, it’s good that you know the surface type of your Billy shelf, as this is crucial for choosing the right sealant.

Here is a brief guide on how to proceed with foil-coated particleboard:

1. Cleaning: Remove dust and grease from the scratched areas using a mild cleaner to ensure good adhesion of the sealant.

2. Small scratches: Use special furniture touch-up markers or wax sticks that match the color of your shelf. This will make the scratches less noticeable visually.

3. Sealing: Since it is a foil surface, you should avoid using liquid sealants like varnish, as these usually do not adhere well and can cause unsightly surface changes. Instead, I recommend a clear furniture polish or a special care wax for foil surfaces. These products penetrate the pores well and protect against moisture and scratches.

4. Application: Apply the polish/wax thinly and evenly with a soft cloth and gently buff it in.

Important: Test the products first on an inconspicuous area to rule out color or gloss differences.

If the scratches are very deep, usually replacing the shelf panel or using a foil repair sheet is the only effective solution.

Best regards!

Hello,

to properly protect a sealed, foil-coated surface like those on Billy shelves from further scratches, you should generally avoid using liquid varnishes. These can damage the foil or apply unevenly.

Instead, furniture waxes or special clear coats designed for foil surfaces are recommended. Furniture touch-up pens help to visually conceal scratches. If you’re looking for a simple and durable solution, the best approach is a combination of cleaning, refreshing with furniture wax, and, if needed, a color-matched pen.

Make sure to choose products suitable for melamine resin-coated or foil-coated furniture, as they are specially formulated for these surfaces.

I would also add that you should allow the treated surface to dry well after application to avoid visible residues.

It’s always fascinating how many people want to apply varnish directly, even though this is often counterproductive on laminate-covered furniture.

Clear coats for laminate? They do exist, but usually they end up being noticeable. So why not just accept that an inexpensive Billy shelf isn’t going to have a flawless surface, especially once it starts showing signs of wear? If you want absolute perfection, you should buy solid wood anyway.

A small scratch actually shows that the piece of furniture is alive and in use, doesn’t it? If someone gets upset about a few scratches, that quickly becomes a post-traumatic furniture disorder ;-)

But seriously: polishing with furniture polish, spot repairs with a wax stick, and then a good polish—that’s, in my opinion, completely enough. For the rest (and if you really find it that bad), the only alternatives are adhesive tape or a custom laminate overlay.
