Hello everyone,

I am currently arranging my apartment and using various KALLAX units from IKEA for this. So far, I have simply stacked them on top of each other, which looks quite good, but I am wondering if it might be better to fasten the units together with screws.

My specific question is: Is it better to securely screw KALLAX units together rather than just stacking them? What are the practical and safety-related advantages or disadvantages?

I am mainly thinking about stability, potential load from weight, safety with children, or in case of moving. Are there also any special tips or procedures to consider when connecting the units?

I look forward to your opinions and experiences!

Screwing is better if you want to secure the modules against slipping.

Don’t forget to pre-drill. Use flat-head screws.

With just a 2x2 setup, it’s not mandatory but recommended if you have children or if there is a lot of movement.

Screwing mainly provides greater stability and prevents the modules from shifting under load or during transport.

This exact improvement in stability is crucial. I would like to add that besides screws, special furniture connectors can also be used, which can be disconnected if necessary while still firmly joining the modules.

Not only fix the modules to each other, but also secure them to the wall.

I fully agree. Particularly, KALLAX shelves are known to be prone to tipping under certain loads. Wall fasteners such as brackets or special anti-tip devices work very effectively here.

The combination of screwing the modules together and securing them to the wall results in a very sturdy overall construction that safely supports even multi-level stacking.

Great topic here!

I think screwing KALLAX units together is brilliant! 🙂 Finally, a shelving system that doesn’t wobble or shift when you place some weight on the top shelf. The extra screws really provide a secure feeling, especially when there are children in the house!

You can get really creative with the arrangement, and it’s a lot of fun to build a stable system.

Besides, everything looks much tidier when the units are firmly connected.

Definitely give it a try—I’d say: screwing makes all the difference! ;-)
