I am considering retrofitting soft-close dampers on the doors of my IKEA Kallax shelving unit. The problem is that some doors close quite loudly and harshly, which can be annoying over time and likely damages the hinges as well.
My question to you is: do these Kallax soft-close dampers last reliably after installation? Or are there common issues with durability, functionality, or similar concerns?
What are your experiences with installation, the quality of the dampers, and are there alternative solutions you would recommend?
I look forward to your feedback, especially regarding the installation effort and material compatibility, since Kallax is made from relatively lightweight material.
Thanks in advance!

Does a Kallax door soft-close damper really last long-term after retrofitting?I can definitely understand your concerns about durability—that was also my main worry before deciding to equip my Kallax doors with dampers.
I tried different manufacturer models during my setup and noticed there are differences in material quality. With high-quality soft-close dampers, the mechanisms do indeed last a long time; I’ve had no issues for over a year now.
What was initially challenging for me was the installation: if the dampers aren’t positioned precisely, it can cause stiffness or malfunction. That’s why I recommend following the exact measurements during installation and tightening all screws firmly, but without overtightening.
I think the gentle closing mechanism is worth the effort and investment because it also helps protect the doors themselves over time—especially since the lighter wood composite material of Kallax seems to benefit from this.
How has your experience with installation been? Have you previously assembled furniture or installed dampers?

Are there alternative solutions you would recommend?Hello Baujohanna,
you asked a great question that many DIY enthusiasts are interested in. Regarding durability: most users report that the standard door dampers for Kallax, when installed correctly, can last several years. Issues often arise with cheaper products, which may start to lose their soft-closing function or fail completely after just a few months.
Alternatively, you can choose soft-close hinges specifically designed for lightweight furniture, which sometimes provide better results than simple dampers. A combination of a door damper and a magnetic catch can also create a smooth closing effect and reduce stress on the materials.
It is important that all components are compatible with the thickness of the shelf door. Kallax connectors are often designed for relatively thin wood, so check that the hinges or dampers are not too heavy or large.
The installation effort is manageable if you follow the instructions carefully and measure all openings beforehand. If you are cautious when drilling, everything should fit well afterwards without any collateral damage.
I hope this helps!

So: yes, they hold up over time if installed properly and not overloaded. And since Kallax doors are generally light anyway, it’s a perfect match. Good luck!
