We speak as professional DIYers *irony*: >We are currently in the learning phase where everything always ends up being much more expensive than expected, and online research doesn’t necessarily provide realistic prices – or does it?
“Problem”: We probably underestimated the cost for interior doors, at least if we want to buy them locally in stores instead of online. The dimensions are standard, 3 times 198.5x86 cm (78.1x33.9 inches) and 2 times 198.5x73 cm (78.1x28.7 inches).
The current doors are 22 years old, still in good condition apart from the door handles, but they have an orange tint that we don’t like visually. The existing laminate flooring (also brownish-orange) matches the doors but probably no longer fits our idea of a new floor.
The owner once suggested the idea of only replacing the door panels, but then the frames would not match the color of the doors anymore, right? We want white door panels or doors in a light wood finish.
Anyway, based on some online research, we thought that for about 120 euros (around $130), you could definitely get good door panels, especially since there are appealing doors online for around 70 euros (about $75) at first glance.
In a local specialist store, we nearly had a heart attack, as even the simplest white doors including the frame and handle barely cost less than 500 euros (about $540).
Or were we simply looking in an overpriced store?
We cannot replace frames ourselves. We have a trained carpenter among our acquaintances who once agreed to help us. We initially thought that replacing 5 door frames, door panels, and handles would take about 2 hours? Probably another miscalculation?
If we were to have the doors fully installed by a professional, based on your experience, what would be a rough estimate for 5 doors?
We originally didn’t want to order online because we thought: the doors might not fit afterward, complaints and returns might be much more complicated than buying locally, sometimes extremely high shipping costs, etc. But since these are basically standard sizes, given the local prices and our miscalculation, we are now uncertain whether we should consider ordering doors, frames, and so on online after all?

toxicmolotof27 Feb 2017 13:22Do you want CPL doors or painted doors? That’s the first major price difference.
For doors with frames (CPL), you can expect around 180–250 euros* including installation and handles in new construction.
*In renovation projects, including removal and disposal, it is significantly more expensive.
So first, you need to clarify exactly what you want. A door is not just a door...
Hollow core lattice?
Hollow core?
Solid core?
Solid wood?
Two hinges?
Three hinges?
Frame width?
Concealed hinges?
Flat panel/raised panel?
Prices start at around 100 euros and can go up from there...
With a budget of 200 euros per door for materials, you should be able to find decent (CPL) doors.

The door frames should be salvageable. Paint them white on a rainy weekend. Remove the door leaf first.
Sand the frame with a random orbital sander using fine 240-grit sandpaper. Sand corners by hand. Remove dust with a Swiffer. Degrease the surface, for example with painter’s spirit.
If necessary, tape off surrounding areas. Then apply two to three coats of satin finish white paint using a painter’s roller. It’s better to apply three thin coats rather than two thick ones. Done.
Please buy good quality paint. Whether 2.5 liters (0.66 gallons) costs 45 or 35 units of currency doesn’t matter, the result has to be right. Good paint suitable for DIY users is available from brands like Herbol or Brillux.

To be honest: we don’t really have any knowledge about door materials so far (but you naturally become a DIYer bit by bit when building a house...). I mean, which type offers what quality and durability.
As far as I know, CPL is a wood-look laminate, so it tends to be relatively affordable.
We have asked the current owner again regarding the frame width.
Our thought about the doors is this: it’s about the doors on the upper floor, so not for “representative” rooms. The kids are small, and I remember my own childhood with doors — my siblings and I definitely weren’t careful, and Lego, stickers, tape, etc. left quite a few marks on the doors. That’s why it would be okay for us to start with something cheap for the doors instead of spending several hundred on each one right now when the kids still don’t understand how expensive a door really is.
I found some CPL doors on various online door stores — linking isn’t allowed, right? — for under 200 euros (about $215). Apparently, you can even get “low-budget doors” cheaper than that, but we don’t need to save just a few euros.
What about these CPL doors in terms of harmful substances? Can you assume that even the inexpensive CPL doors are safe, or are CPL doors in the 150–200 euro (about $160–215) range “toxic”?
Since this isn’t a new build, the old frames and doors will have to be removed and disposed of. Disposal is a good point. This will be treated waste, right, so it should be more expensive?

So, if I calculate that average CPL doors cost around 80 euros and up, and we need 5 door frames, we’re looking at 400-500 euros or maybe more.
For that price, even if good paint costs 60 euros, it’s not much. However, we don’t own an orbital sander or a paint roller, and whether the result will be good with my skills is another question... But maybe I should have more confidence in that area. The frames still look really good, and just not having to replace them all would be great...

For purely cosmetic renovations, there are special door refurbishing services like Meister Portas and others. Nowadays, so many things are covered with films—almost anything you can think of—even brand new windows.
