Hello everyone,

I have been dealing with an increasingly bothersome issue with the faded surfaces of my KALLAX shelf from IKEA. The original color and finish appear quite pale and washed out in places due to sunlight exposure or even normal indoor lighting, making the shelf look much older than it actually is.

I am particularly interested in whether there are practical methods to restore or protect the faded surface without having to repaint or replace the piece entirely. Are there suitable cleaning or maintenance products specifically recommended for the laminate surfaces of this model?

Has anyone had experience with treatments that provide UV protection or refresh the surface without causing damage?

I look forward to your tips and suggestions!

I would recommend placing the shelf in a shadier spot to prevent further fading. For cleaning, a damp cloth is sufficient; I would avoid using harsh chemicals.

The fading of KALLAX surfaces is mainly due to UV exposure. Laminate coatings are not UV-resistant, so prolonged sunlight exposure reduces color intensity.

A post-treatment with special laminate care products, which have a slight polishing effect, can temporarily improve the faded appearance. UV-protective coatings do exist, but they are rarely available for simple furniture and usually require extensive preparation work, including light sanding of the surface.

An alternative could be a self-adhesive film that can completely change the look of the shelf and protect it from UV, if surface treatment is not an option.

I completely understand how frustrating it is when a piece of furniture you use with care suddenly shows signs of wear.

Maybe you could try using a special furniture care product or even a laminate conditioner gently. However, I’ve heard that it can also be quite helpful to make the rooms a bit darker with curtains or blinds to prevent further damage.

What do you think, how strong is the sunlight in the room? And do you have children or pets that might be putting extra strain on the surface?

Hey, I know about the fading issue with KALLAX shelves – they suddenly look so old, even though you just bought them. 😅

I would try using furniture wax; it sometimes refreshes the colors a bit and gives the surface a light protective layer. Also, you might consider getting creative with decoration – plants, colorful boxes, or decorative items can draw attention away from the faded veneer. 😉

But why bother with such cosmetic patch-ups at all? Furniture is meant to be practical above all, not to shine like it just came out of a designer showroom. Fading reflects the passage of time and gives character.

Of course, if someone really wants to spruce up their shelf for Instagram, they won’t avoid resorting to paint or laminates as a trick. Personally, I don’t see the point—life isn’t always a high-gloss brochure.
