Dear all,

While thinking about planning the construction staircase, I just realized that the side of the stair opening with an 18cm (7 inches) intermediate ceiling and a 20cm (8 inches) floor buildup somehow needs to look finished as well. The stair builder provided an estimate including cladding, but somehow I didn’t consider that it adds up to almost 40cm (16 inches) overall. Do you really cover all of that with wood? Or is it more common to only clad the buildup and plaster the ceiling? I can’t really imagine it right now and would love to invite everyone who already has finished houses to share pictures! Show me (us) your stair openings!

And those who haven’t started building yet are welcome to share their plans.

Best regards

We will probably choose a steel stringer staircase and cover the side views of the floor slab with the same steel (about 30cm (12 inches)); that is the current idea. Otherwise, I would rather consider plastering. Your 40cm (16 inches) high wood cladding also seems a bit too bulky to me. However, it also depends on where and how much wood you have used elsewhere, so it doesn’t appear too heavy.

Take a look, I happened to find this in my pictures earlier. For me, this amount of wood as shown here would be too much.

Yes, and whether it is already 40cm (16 inches) is also questionable. In my case, the railing is also made of wood. However, I have painted and covered everything, so it no longer has the typical wood tone... I also think that I might only have the floor structure clad and then plaster the suspended ceiling.

We also plastered it.

I’m a fan of flat steel railings. We have a flat steel railing around our outdoor terrace.

But, first, although it might look inexpensive at first glance, it actually isn’t; and second (and much more importantly), no insurance company would cover liability if a child or a guest child slips through and falls with this kind of design. From an insurance standpoint, for any fall height above around 1–1.2 meters (about 3–4 feet) — I don’t remember the exact figure — there must be no gap that a child’s head can fit through. This applies both indoors and outdoors.
