Hello everyone,
we want to have a wardrobe custom-built by a carpenter for our future condominium. Attached is the carpenter’s initial plan.
We really like the proposal (especially the 2 clothes rails), but we are unsure how to design the narrow right side: instead of having shelves across the entire height, we are currently leaning towards a shoe compartment at the bottom, then drawers up to about halfway, and shelves above that. Next to the wardrobe, there will be a shoe and seating bench where most of the shoes will be stored. By the way, there are 3 of us (including a 3-year-old toddler).
What are your experiences with wardrobes – which layout has worked well for you?
Thank you very much for your help!

We have now decided that the most important thing is actually storage space for jackets and coats. Therefore, instead of the shelves on the right, we have planned an additional clothing rod with enough height to accommodate a long coat. Below that, instead of the shelves, we have three drawers for scarves and hats – that should be sufficient. At the very top, we have shelves for bike helmets and similar items.

As a tip for the rod spacing... really measure the length of a jacket on the hanger. Depending on the hanger, an additional 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 inches) is often added to the jacket length. So, for the left section, it might be better to position the lower rod around 80 / 90 cm (31½ / 35½ inches) for the children’s clothes. As Yvonne suggests, definitely keep it adjustable.

And maybe try out beforehand whether you like the height of the rods. I guess they are around 1.8/1.9 meters (5 ft 11 in/6 ft 3 in)? That would be too high for me, but I’m quite short myself.
