ᐅ The outdoor water tap was not connected.

Hello everyone,

We have a small problem. We have already completed the handover of our new build and shortly after noticed that one of the two outdoor faucets is not working. The site manager immediately sent a technician to fix the issue, but they couldn’t do anything... they only called around to find out which of the colleagues had connected everything. Well, it turns out that one of the outdoor faucets was simply never connected. And it’s the one located at the kitchen window, leading to the backyard.

We have now been offered an alternative to install a new water tap from the utility room. This would mean the faucet is no longer at the back in the garden but on the right side of the house by the carport... which is very inconvenient and not what we had planned.

The other option would be to reroute the pipe behind the new kitchen unit (just installed by the kitchen fitter for about €10,000 (around $11,000)) and drill into the utility room to connect the original faucet. This seems very complex to us, and I would only accept it if the piping is concealed within the walls. We’re also a bit concerned about potentially damaging the new kitchen.

Either way, it will be costly and disruptive. We would have to either partially dismantle the kitchen and open up walls or drill a new hole and seal the original location.

What would you do or recommend? And is it possible to claim a partial refund if the faucet is relocated and not installed as originally planned? Thanks in advance! 🙂

So the plumbing company seriously has a valve fitter first, and only after that comes another person who just lays pipes to the valves he finds? ? ?

Yes, the outdoor faucet was installed long before the other work... Well, the company itself called today and tried to resolve the issue, saying they want to run it out of the right wall towards the carport... I just asked if we would receive compensation if we agreed to this compromise. They then suggested that if we signed a maintenance contract with them, the first service would be free... 🙂 Since we don’t want to work with this company again, I politely declined and called the site manager... Now they will move the faucet to the back, branching off from the kitchen connection near the sink... including an additional meter. The original faucet will, of course, be removed, and new cladding will be installed and re-grouted... Well, at least the faucet will be roughly where it was supposed to be.

I would go for that. An outdoor faucet is usually only positioned approximately. Sometimes it’s exactly where you need it, other times you need to stretch the hose a bit, sometimes even several meters (yards).
Another tip: install a rainwater diverter in a downpipe, and have it drain into a nice rain barrel. That way, you have plenty of free water outside for watering plants and other uses.
Having two taps is also convenient. I have one on the south-facing terrace and another on the east side in front of the garage—useful for easily soaping up and washing the car. On the west side, there’s no outdoor faucet, but in the utility room on that side, there is a sink with a faucet right by the door. You can quickly fill a bucket there without having to walk through the house in dirty shoes.

I would never put something like that in front of my new house!
My in-laws keep insisting on setting one up as well...
If it doesn’t rain much, you end up with stagnant water full of mosquitoes and flies. No thanks 🙄

There are models with a lid on top and a tap at the bottom. No flies, but perfect, soft, free water for plants.

I know that. Last summer, I removed the lid at my in-laws' place and found thousands of mosquito larvae. You can only place something like that away from the house; otherwise, you’ll have the insects inside and around the patio.
