Hello everyone, I am currently considering whether the IKEA KALLAX shelving unit is really suitable for a children's room. My thought is that, due to its many compartments, the shelf looks neat and might be well suited for storing toys, books, and craft supplies in an organized way. On the other hand, I wonder if it is stable enough, if the size fits, and how the shelf performs in daily use – especially when small children often climb on it or take things out. Does anyone have experience with KALLAX in a children’s room? How do you handle safety, organization, and flexibility? I would appreciate exchanging ideas, including practical tips or criticisms!
Hello, ZIANKAU, here is a brief overview that might help you in making your decision:
1. Dimensions: KALLAX is available in various sizes, typically 77x77 cm (30x30 inches) per module. This fits well in average children’s rooms but should be considered individually.
2. Stability: The shelving unit is made of fully laminated chipboard, which is sturdy – but it can still tip over, so it must be secured to the wall.
3. Versatility: The simple grid design allows for different sized boxes or baskets to be used, and doors or drawers can also be added.
4. Safety: The edges are not sharp, but rubber bumpers can be attached for toddlers.
5. Cleaning: The surfaces are smooth and easy to clean with a damp cloth, which is an advantage in a children’s room.
In summary: KALLAX is solid, safe when secured, and flexible. I would recommend it if the size fits.

YES, KALLAX is perfect for the kids’ room! 🙂
I love how quickly you can tidy up, even if a child has turned half the play area upside down again. With large boxes inside, you can store everything in no time, and it still looks much neater! No more mess for the parents – that’s priceless 😉
I agree, that’s essential. Safety comes first, otherwise even the nicest system is useless.

For the little climbers among us, wall mounting really helps

I also let my child decide which toys go into which compartments. It promotes self-organizationThis is a very important point that I also like to emphasize. When children feel they have a say, they are much more motivated to keep things tidy.
Additionally, if parents use boxes in KALLAX shelving units that are easy to open and close, children learn a lot about independent tidying up and responsibility. This way, the shelf becomes not just a piece of furniture but also a learning tool.
Hey, I just wanted to quickly mention: I’ve often seen that you can place small felt pads under KALLAX units to make them easier to move, especially when they are heavily loaded.
Additionally, the side panels are great for attaching small magnets, making the shelving unit more child-friendly! This instantly makes the kids’ room more colorful and personalized.
With these small tips, you can easily combine safety and flexibility, and the shelving unit never gets boring!
