Hello everyone,

I am currently redesigning the children's room and considering using an IKEA Kallax shelf unit for storage. However, I have some concerns about its durability: How well does a Kallax shelf actually hold up to typical rough play by children?

In everyday use, kids might pull on it, jump near it, or lean against it. I am especially interested in whether the shelf is stable enough to withstand such stresses over time, or if it would be better to choose another option.

Does anyone have experience with Kallax shelves in a children's room, particularly regarding stability and safety? I would appreciate any feedback!

Regarding safety: Besides secure installation and proper use, it’s important to pay attention to the edges. Kallax has quite sharp edges, which can cause minor injuries during strong bumps.

IKEA offers edge protectors (e.g., foam guards), or you can make your own using foam rubber. This is especially a useful addition for younger children.

Even though the shelving unit isn’t specifically designed for rough play, such measures can help make the children’s room safer.

Thank you very much for all the helpful answers and tips!

In summary, I take away that Kallax is sturdy enough for regular use in a child's room, but not suitable as a climbing frame. Wall anchoring is a must, as well as weighting the bottom and protecting the edges.

If these points are followed, it seems like a practical solution. Therefore, I will order the shelf and implement the recommended measures.

If anyone else has further experiences or good advice, please feel free to share!
