Hello everyone,
Is there anyone who would advise against an open-plan kitchen? Especially homeowners who previously had a closed kitchen and now regret having an open kitchen after building a new house? Or do the positive experiences clearly outweigh the negatives?
Thank you!

And I think smells are the main argument against an open-plan kitchen. Personally, I don’t like still smelling what I cooked the day before in the living room^^. That depends on kitchen appliances and/or ventilation. The open kitchen itself isn’t to blame. For example, Berbel hoods are great at filtering out odors—no wonder when, for instance, 2 kg (4.4 lbs) of activated carbon are used. Or direct exhaust ventilation.

And I really don’t want to smell cat food in the living room, either, Completely agree. That stuff smells awful (but actually doesn’t taste bad).
I only have a cheap, used budget kitchen, and it will stay that way for quite a while. When I cook, I simply open the window; our kitchen has a large window. Door closed, window open, and the issue is quickly resolved. When we didn’t have the kitchen door installed yet (which was for quite some time), the smell used to spread all the way up to the first floor. Since we finally installed the door, that’s no longer the case. This way, the exhaust air goes straight outside without escaping into the hallway first.
I haven’t tried cat food yet^^. Our pets get high-quality food, but it still doesn’t smell pleasant. At least not the cats’ wet food. The dog is fed a raw diet, and the cats’ dry food doesn’t really smell, but the wet food... well.

In our end-terrace house from 1970, we made an opening to connect the kitchen with the living area.
Especially with two small children, the large open space that was created is very nice. Otherwise, the kitchen would have been a separate room, only accessible through the hallway. It would have been difficult to notice what the kids were doing in the living/dining area while working in the kitchen.
We are rarely bothered by odors. We don't even have a range hood, but we also rarely fry anything. When we do, we either tilt a window or open the large sliding door. We have no regrets. However, personal circumstances often play an important role...
