Hello everyone,

Is there anyone who would advise against an open-plan kitchen? Especially homeowners who previously had a closed kitchen and now regret having an open kitchen after building a new house? Or do the positive experiences clearly outweigh the negatives?

Thank you!

Nothing more to add! I have cursed every open-plan kitchen so far. The kitchen is for cooking and working, with frying smells, and the living room is for relaxing, being neat, and not smelling like a fast-food place... and I have yet to see a ventilation system that truly removes 100% of cooking odors (and grease particles) when frying.

You are overestimating doors; odors, whether good or bad, still pass through them.

By the way, my food smells but does not stink. Good range hoods and ventilation systems prevent any issues.

Exactly. However, I rarely use the range hood because it really gets in the way. This is a minor downside that can be overlooked since my food doesn’t smell bad either.

For example, my wife can’t stand the smell of about three-quarters of the dishes I cook; sometimes it even makes her feel really sick.

Can she at least stand your personal scent? 🤨

Therefore, we would like to use the momentum of this discussion to get feedback on our considerations, especially from supporters of open-plan kitchens.

Your examples don’t reflect your question. Your opinions relate more to the issue of having an open hallway or not.

Yeah, mostly.
It’s more that she doesn’t like or can’t tolerate certain ingredients, like fish or onions, for example.
I, on the other hand, really enjoy those.
Luckily, she likes garlic...

Phew, that’s an underrated stroke of luck 😀

Definitely not from me. Seriously, if garlic were a problem for her, she probably wouldn’t be my wife... 😱

I know the situation of finding a life partner 😎

What would be your proposed solution??
I would swap the living area with the kitchen. In summer, without children, you usually spend a lot of time outside, and with children even more so. Shorter distances to the outdoor dining area mean fewer sand dunes tracked inside.

Regarding the stairway being open or closed, I would prefer a compromise between the two.
