Hello everyone,

Is there anyone who would advise against an open-plan kitchen? Especially homeowners who previously had a closed kitchen and now regret having an open kitchen after building a new house? Or do the positive experiences clearly outweigh the negatives?

Thank you!

What do you think? Have we forgotten anything important? Logic says option 1, but my heart says option 2 🙂
Follow your heart and discuss option 2 here in the forum. The visible dimensions seem a bit arbitrary to me, and I’m curious about what’s not visible.

With cinnamon? 🙂

After my first rushed floor plan fail here, I’m still a bit hesitant 🙄 🤨 But at least it made us start from scratch, and it feels better now.

It’s perfectly fine if you decide against advice and opinions—it’s your house after all. If starting from “zero” now feels better, then it was worth it, right?

I'm confused... which peninsula from option 2 are you referring to?

You’re right, I complicated things way too much. Since the discussion has progressed, I’ve combined both options into a "heart with mind" layout:

Floor plan of a house with living room, dining area, kitchen, stairs, and terrace

The red lines indicate only partial walls. You would leave openings to the hallway. If that’s an issue, a door can easily be added later. The island would then become a peninsula, which I would shift toward the exterior wall (green arrow). I would relocate the pantry entrance to the hallway (basically through the cloakroom). You can move the wall between the hallway and pantry downward to create more space for the cloakroom. Also, the area under the stairs can be used.

I would definitely use the kitchen run on the right side as additional counter space—otherwise, there isn’t enough work surface. Specifically, approximately 3.8m (12.5 ft) of kitchen run, with 1.2m (4 ft) at the top reserved for fridge/freezer and tall cabinets, and the rest for countertop with upper cabinets. Opposite that, a 2.6m (8.5 ft) peninsula and a 1.2m (4 ft) walkway. The peninsula should be at least 1m (3 ft) deep, and the kitchen run could be made deeper as well (around 80cm (31 inches)) to accommodate appliances like a toaster and similar items.

I definitely wouldn't do that, as that's one of the nice features of this kitchen.
But you can't really improve much with just a cut-out there.
