Hello everyone,

Is there anyone who would advise against an open-plan kitchen? Especially homeowners who previously had a closed kitchen and now regret having an open kitchen after building a new house? Or do the positive experiences clearly outweigh the negatives?

Thank you!

I also think that the sliding door is a good compromise between open and closed.
The homeowner is unsure; what should we advise? Even if everyone recommends leaving it open, it might still be the wrong choice.

Folding walls are a bit more complex—they also require more space and budget. There are some excellent systems available in the commercial sector.

Floor-to-ceiling sliding doors would also create a much stronger sense of connection and openness.

We are also planning an open layout with a peninsula and a pantry where the more cumbersome appliances like Thermomix, Bosch MUM, etc. can operate out of sight.

Open kitchen, anytime again! Just a few more words now.

We once had an open-plan kitchen in a rental apartment. I never wanted that, but due to a housing shortage, we had to take the apartment. I never want to have that again. Noise from kitchen appliances, cooking odors—no thanks. In our house, we have a separate kitchen again, thank goodness!

Definitely a closed kitchen.
We lived with an open kitchen for over 10 years ourselves, and every time we went on vacation in Denmark, where they have open kitchens, I just found it annoying.
It’s not really the supposed mess or the smells that bother me. What really annoys me is when I’m sitting comfortably in the living room with a coffee and a book or watching a movie, and then my husband or the teens get hungry and start cooking, with all the sizzling, noise, and clattering of plates—open kitchen and all. Honestly, depending on my mood, it’s really frustrating—closed kitchen, door closed, and everyone has peace and quiet.

Our kitchen is big enough that we can cook with friends or hang out together, but if that’s not what we want, I simply shut the door tight.

Interestingly, among our circle of friends and family, everyone has switched away from open kitchens, except for one family who consciously chose an open kitchen again when building their new house.

So, everyone should do what feels right for them. You have to be happy with it yourself, no matter what others say.

That’s exactly how we see it too. We also have pets, which I can now keep out again thanks to the kitchen door, for example when I’m cooking or have a piece of meat on the countertop. If one person wants to watch TV in the evening, another is loading the dishwasher or cooking, or the kids are grabbing something— I really don’t need to hear all of that directly. And I think the smells are the main argument against an open kitchen. Personally, I dislike still smelling what I cooked the day before in the living room the next day^^. And I definitely don’t want to smell cat food in the living room as soon as it’s served fresh. I really can’t understand the hype around open kitchens at all.
