Hello everyone,
Is there anyone who would advise against an open-plan kitchen? Especially homeowners who previously had a closed kitchen and now regret having an open kitchen after building a new house? Or do the positive experiences clearly outweigh the negatives?
Thank you!

Myrna_Loy2 Nov 2021 22:49I really dislike open kitchens. Like, truly. I want to be able to work in a kitchen, but I definitely don’t want to see fruit bowls, kettles, toasters, and so on from the sofa. The trend of hiding all these things at a huge cost until the kitchen matches the beige-gray-black lacquered TV wall and sofa combo bores me to death.
We have a 22 m² (237 sq ft) kitchen-living area and a separate room next to it as the living room. That way, you don’t have to wipe kitchen odors off the piano. And the dog bowl is far enough away and doesn’t have to fit into any design concept.

I cannot compare a Bauhaus-style house or similar with Sanssouci or Schönbrunn. Off-topic: Regarding the openness of the kitchen, yes 😉 At least the Meisterhäuser in Dessau actually have closed kitchens, even with an additional utility room.
Today's open kitchens, by contrast, reflect the fact that there is no longer kitchen staff working out of sight, but rather cooking is integrated into the residents’ daily life.

Definitely a closed kitchen.
We lived with an open kitchen ourselves for over 10 years, and on every vacation in Denmark we stay in places with open kitchens – and I just find it annoying.
It’s not the supposed mess or the smells that bother me. What really annoys me is, for example, when I’m comfortably sitting in the living room with a coffee and a book or watching a movie, and just then my husband or the teenagers get hungry, turn on the stove, frying noises and clattering plates included. With an open kitchen, I have to be honest, depending on my mood, it gets really irritating – a closed kitchen, door closed, and everyone has their peace.
Our kitchen is big enough for cooking with friends or hanging out together, but if we don’t want that, I just close the door firmly.
Interestingly, in our circle of friends and family, everyone is also “cured” of open kitchens; only one family deliberately chose an open kitchen again when building their new house.
So, everyone should do what feels right for them. You just have to be happy with it yourself, no matter what others say.

Honestly, depending on my mood, it can be really irritating – a closed kitchen with a door means everyone has peace and quiet. ^^ That might work in holiday mode. In everyday life, very few people can live in a way that they wouldn’t annoy each other during the day. 😉
