Hi everyone,
I had the facade of my house painted by a professional company, using silicone resin paint as stated in the quote.
After the first coat, I noticed many cracks in the paint. It was painted two more times, but without any improvement. Previously, the facade had no cracks.
The facade has many indentations due to the plaster. The paint was applied with a roller.
Now the company says these are just air bubbles and that this does not affect the quality.
I don’t believe that.
What do you think about this?
Best regards,
Ulfi

These fine cracks on the surface of the silicone resin facade coating are unavoidable and normal in the recesses, and they do not indicate any defect.
Because the material thickness often accumulates several times over in the deeper parts of the plaster compared to the higher areas, these film defects on the coating surface inevitably occur due to the drying and film formation process moving from the outside inward.
What your painter told you about air bubbles here can be dismissed like a fairy tale. The fine pores are caused by the diffusion of water within the coating and are also harmless.

Hello, I don’t fully agree with Schwarzmeier’s view. Where the paint has cracked, it is clearly applied too thickly. Painters often prefer to do everything “in one go,” meaning applying a thick coat once and charging twice, to achieve full coverage—this can lead to issues like this. I don’t exclude myself from this either. But as you can see in the pictures, the cracks only appear in the recesses. This is also a sign that the paint was not properly spread out (just slapping the paint on and rolling up and down once is not enough). Every painter learns in their training how to APPLY, SPREAD, and LAYER paint. Whether the quality is acceptable or not I won’t judge, but I certainly wouldn’t approve or pay for the facade as it is. Exterior paint is not only meant to make the house look nice but also to protect the building structure from moisture and dampness. In other words, rainwater should run off. For example, what happens in winter: it rains during the day and water remains trapped in the pores; at night it freezes, the water expands, and paint can flake off. Since the painting company will of course not admit any fault, I would first contact the paint manufacturer. They have field technicians who inspect such cases and can usually offer an opinion about whether the paint is at fault, which I personally doubt. I hope this helps you for now. I would appreciate it if you keep us updated. Best regards, Thommi

Hello everyone,
First of all, thanks for your help.
According to the quote, the facade was supposed to be painted twice. By now, it has been painted three times within one week. However, the cracks keep reappearing. The company says this is due to the rough texture of the render and that it could happen with any paint.
Is this really a defect?
Is it worth hiring an expert to assess the situation?

Hello, I can say with 90 percent certainty that the paint was applied too thickly on the cracked areas. If the facade had been properly painted twice with facade paint of the correct viscosity, you wouldn’t have any cracks. My trainer always said, “There is no bad material, only bad craftsmen.” An expert will cause additional costs that you will have to pay. Try contacting the paint manufacturer first. They will strongly defend themselves against any claims that the problem is with the paint or that their company’s reputation is damaged. And the texture of the plaster probably has the least to do with it. You can still hire an expert later if needed.

Hello
On Tuesday, a representative from the paint manufacturer and the master painter will come for an inspection.
But I can already guess what the outcome will be.
The master painter will keep persuading the representative until everything is approved.
Well, we will not give up hope. I will get back to you once the representative has been here.

Until then

Regards
