Hello everyone,

Today the exposed concrete screed is being laid in our hallway, and we are now looking for ideas on how to design our concrete platform staircase (straight flight, landing, straight flight in the opposite direction).

  • We have ruled out wood, as the shoe cabinet for my office shoes will be in the basement, so I will be frequently going up and down the stairs in high-heeled shoes right there.
  • We don’t find small-format tiles very appealing because we would prefer the steps to have no grout lines, at least on the treads.
  • We were advised against large-format tiles, i.e., at least 90 cm (35 inches) long to match the step length, because cutting them would be very time-consuming and therefore costly.
  • So we have ended up considering natural stone.

We would like the staircase to be in a color similar to the gray exposed concrete screed, which is why we have looked at "Basaltina" on site, one of the more expensive stones. Does anyone have any ideas regarding gray natural stones that are not too busy in appearance?

Or perhaps completely different suggestions?

We don’t have an exposed screed, but gray tiles... However, I like the contrast and so we chose a dark stone (Basalt Nero).
