Hello everyone,

I have a somewhat unusual problem and hope to get some helpful advice here: My pet, specifically my cat, unfortunately scratched the back panel of my KALLAX shelf unit from IKEA. The back panel is made of thin particleboard, and the scratches are quite deep and unsightly, making the whole shelf look damaged. I don’t want to replace the entire back panel since the rest of the shelf is still in good condition, and I want to avoid a lot of effort or high costs.

My question is: What are the options to repair scratches like these on a KALLAX back panel as simply and effectively as possible? Are there special fillers, paints, or methods that have proven to work well indoors without significantly compromising stability or appearance? It would also be great if anyone has experience with DIY techniques or suitable repair kits. Thank you in advance!

Hello nekla,

I understand your concern well, especially if you don’t want to build a completely new shelving unit. The KALLAX back panel is often made from thin particleboard or MDF, coated with paint or melamine, and is therefore not very resistant to scratches.

For repairing such scratches, I recommend the following steps:

1. Cleaning: First, thoroughly clean the surface with a mild detergent and let it dry. Dust or grease can prevent good adhesion of repair materials.

2. Filler: For deeper scratches, you can use special wood filler or furniture repair putty. There are also liquid wood fillers that work well for fine cracks. It is important that the filler sands smoothly so the surface will be even afterward.

3. Sanding: After drying, gently sand the repaired area with fine sandpaper (grit 220 or finer) until it is flush with the rest of the back panel.

4. Color matching: Since the back panel often has a coated surface, matching the color can be a bit tricky. Applying thin layers of acrylic paint or wood lacquer in white or the matching color helps conceal the repair. It’s better to apply several thin coats and allow them to dry thoroughly.

5. Sealing: Optionally, you can apply a matte clear coat for protection to make the repair last longer.

One important note: since the back panel actually has a stabilizing function, the repair should not weaken its strength. Avoid using excessive moisture or rough fillers.

If the scratch is very deep and the back panel seems unstable, you should consider replacing the panel completely – this is usually affordable from IKEA and often easier.

I’m curious whether you are aiming for a quick cosmetic fix or a long-term repair? And how deep the scratches are?

Regards!

I completely agree – for me, a little touch of color magic is a lifesaver in a pinch! 🙂 You can easily work with small brushes and achieve a really good visual result.

If you feel like doing a little DIY, you might want to consider flexible fillers, which are a bit more elastic than traditional wood filler, especially for thin panels like those in KALLAX – they’re less likely to crack again.

And for the "cat scratch test" afterwards, I’d maybe place a thin piece of felt under the shelf, in case your kitty wants to be involved in the repair again 😉

Otherwise: good luck with the rescue mission – I can imagine that shelf means a lot to you!

Hello nekla,

you can start by smoothing the scratches with fine sandpaper. Then apply filler and sand it again after it has dried. Finally, apply a matte white paint to match the color. This way, you can avoid completely replacing the back panel.
