ᐅ My KALLAX constantly attracts dust – what can I do to prevent this?

Paja45Hello everyone,
I have the following problem: My KALLAX shelf constantly attracts dust, as if it were some kind of dust magnet. No matter how often I wipe it, within just a few days a visible layer of dust settles on it again. I know that furniture made of wood or wood-based materials generally attracts dust, but does anyone have experience or tips on how to minimize this? Are there special surface treatments, cleaning methods, or preventive measures that can help in the long term? I don’t want to have to clean constantly but rather address the root cause as much as possible.
Regarding the conditions: The shelf is in the living room, in a rather dry room with low humidity, and the windows are frequently open. It is made of white coated MDF surface material from IKEA. I would be very grateful for tips or experiences with similar phenomena!

Jokes aside: Dust is caused by airborne particles, and white MDF apparently makes dust more visible compared to darker furniture. A simple method that works well for me is regularly wiping it with a slightly damp microfiber cloth instead of dry dusting. This way, you don’t just stir up dust clouds but actually trap the dust from the air.
You can also try using an antistatic furniture spray, which you can usually find inexpensively at a drugstore. The antistatic effect reduces the electrostatic charge of the MDF that attracts dust.
Finally, if it’s practical, keep the window closed while cleaning and then ventilate thoroughly afterward. Humidity also plays a role: a room that is too dry practically “pulls” dust toward it. Maybe a reliable humidifier or houseplants could help 🙂 None of these are magic solutions, but together they usually make a difference.
Good luck and no trouble with the dust monster! 😎

My KALLAX shelf constantly attracts dust, as if it were some kind of dust magnet.Regarding dust attraction on MDF surfaces, here is some information: white and light-colored painted surfaces can actually make dust particularly visible due to their smooth texture — meaning dust particles are easier to see on a white background than on darker surfaces. However, this does not necessarily mean that more dust is adhering.
Increasing indoor humidity to around 40-50% can help, since dry air often causes more dust to stay airborne and promotes electrostatic charge. A humidifier or regularly airing out the room by briefly opening a window is useful, but the latter can also bring in new dust, so it should be done carefully.
For cleaning, I recommend using a slightly damp microfiber cloth without any cleaning agents, as aggressive substances can damage the surface and alter its electrostatic properties.
Antistatic furniture care products can sometimes have a greater effect, but it is important to check the ingredients to avoid residues or allergic reactions.
Using a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter for air purification and regularly cleaning the floors also helps reduce dust levels.
In summary: cleaning combined with humidity control and reducing dust sources provides the best results. Additional mechanical treatments (e.g., furniture polishing) are not effective unless the surface is specifically designed for them.

My KALLAX shelf constantly attracts dust, as if it were some kind of dust magnet. No matter how often I wipe it, a visible layer of dust settles again after just a few days.To analyze the dust issue with your KALLAX more precisely, it would be helpful to consider any electrical or mechanical factors present in your home. Here is a more detailed approach:
1. Electrostatic Charge: MDF with a plastic coating, as commonly used in KALLAX, can build up an electric charge under dry conditions. This charge attracts dust particles. To reduce this, you mainly need to optimize the humidity levels. Ideally, relative humidity should be between 40 and 60%. You can achieve this either with a good humidifier or by proper ventilation and placing houseplants that release moisture.
2. Air Circulation: Your KALLAX is located in the living room, and windows are often open. Depending on the location, drafts may blow fine dust directly onto the shelf surfaces. To be more precise: Have you noticed whether the dust accumulates more on the windward or leeward side? This can influence your cleaning strategy.
3. Material and Surface Texture: The melamine-coated surface of the KALLAX is smooth, which makes dust easy to see. However, smooth surfaces are also easier to clean than rough ones. Abrasive cleaning agents should be avoided because they can damage the surface and cause more dust to adhere.
4. Cleaning: Avoid dry cloths, as they often just stir up dust. Instead, use a slightly damp microfiber cloth. Additionally, there are special antistatic cleaners that are non-sticky and leave no residues. These reduce the electrical charge and thus decrease dust attraction.
5. Other Sources: Do you have many textiles in the room (carpets, cushions) or pets? Both indirectly increase dust levels. Also, radiators near the shelf can promote dust circulation.
Finally, a question for you: How often do you currently clean the shelf? And have you tried any furniture care products? These details will help provide more tailored advice.

Are there any special surface treatments, cleaning methods, or preventive measures that can help in the long term? Here is a brief guide that can help you reduce dust on the KALLAX more effectively:
1. Surface cleaning
- Use a slightly damp microfiber cloth for wiping. Microfiber cloths capture dust better than pure cotton cloths.
- Occasionally use an anti-static furniture care spray suitable for melamine-coated furniture. These sprays help reduce static electricity that attracts dust.
2. Improve air quality
- Make sure to increase the room’s humidity level (especially in winter). A humidifier set to 40-50% would be ideal.
- Avoid opening windows too often when it is very windy or dusty outside.
3. Reduce dust sources
- Remove or regularly clean textiles nearby that release dust.
- If needed, use an air purifier with a HEPA filter to remove dust particles from the air.
4. Consistency
- Wiping once a week is sufficient under normal dust conditions.
- Avoid harsh cleaning agents that can damage surfaces.
Summary: The best results come from a combination of optimized cleaning, limiting dust entry through airflow, and improving humidity. If you have allergies, these measures can also help your health.
Hope this helps! 🙂
