ᐅ Malm bed squeaks despite replacement parts – what to do now?

Hello everyone,

A few weeks ago, I bought a Malm bed from Ikea, and it started squeaking shortly after. Not wanting to give up easily, I ordered the recommended replacement parts—including foam strips for the slatted bed base and new screws. However, the bed still makes annoying noises, especially when turning over or sitting down.

I’ve already tried tightening all the screws several times and realigning the slatted base, but the issue persists. In my opinion, the sounds seem to come from the joint between the bed frame and the individual slats.

Has anyone experienced something similar? What additional steps could be taken if replacing the parts doesn’t solve the problem? I would appreciate any tips, as otherwise I can’t get a comfortable sleep on the bed.

Check all connection points between the bed frame, headboards, and slatted base for minimal movement.

It is important to add that even connections that seem secure can allow movements due to material fatigue or slight deformations.

A practical method is to use masking tape on potential contact points to identify areas of friction. Once the cause is clear, appropriate padding materials can be applied precisely.

I would like to point out that replacement parts are often sent, but they do not always address the actual cause of the problem.

It would be important to ensure that the slats themselves are neither warped nor broken, as small cracks can also cause noises.

How was the quality of the delivered replacement parts verified? Are they original Ikea parts or compatible ones? This can have a significant impact on the outcome.

That's a good point. If replacement parts are cheap copies, the effort is hardly worth it. Use original parts!

Additionally, check if the floor under the bed is level. Irregularities or slight wobbling can increase squeaking. A sufficiently smooth and stable surface is important.

Maybe you have already considered taking the bed completely apart to carefully inspect all the joints?

Thank you for the tip! I actually disassembled the bed completely this morning and inspected all the parts very thoroughly. I noticed that some of the support slats are quite rough and uneven, causing the slats not to sit completely stable.

Apply Teflon tape to the contact points

I will try that this evening. Maybe it will solve the friction issue.

I ordered the replacement parts directly from Ikea, not from third-party sellers. So the quality seems to be fine. I really suspect that the mechanical fit of the bed is not ideal in some areas.

I will report back once I have made progress!
