Hello,
we want to buy a dining table with chairs, specifically the Stornäs with the Ingolf. A friend told me that the wood can be damaged just by pressing it with a fingernail. My question is:
Is there a way to make the furniture more durable, for example with a varnish or something similar, and has anyone tried this before?
Best regards,
Franz

Hello
The surface can be sealed to make it more resistant to liquids and dirt. This can be done with a good varnish. Unfortunately, soft wood cannot be made harder, so the issue with dents and scratches that develop over time will remain. A varnish only forms a very thin layer that is highly durable and abrasion-resistant, but it does not strengthen the underlying wood.
I don’t have the table in front of me, but maybe a full-surface glass top would be an option?
If you want solid wood, it should be oak or maple. These are very hard and can tolerate rougher use.
Another option is to live with the table and it lives with you, and if things get too bad, you can give it a makeover by sanding it down and resealing it.
