Dear forum community,

Since I am currently in the middle of building my house and considering the lighting, I have decided to equip my home with LED bulbs.
Do you have experience with LED bulbs? Can you give me any advice or share what you are using?

Thank you in advance,

Yours, Nicole.

Dimming is nonsense in my opinion... that's what a fireplace and candles are for 🙂

If I’m understanding correctly, those €10 units have a power output of about 1 W. What do you want to illuminate with them? Or how many are you planning to install?

There are also nice recessed LEDs with a SINGLE 2.5 W LED. A set of three costs around a hundred euros. But in my opinion, they look much better. I have a set of three above my nearly 4 m (13 ft) countertop, and they work really well.

1 watt is really too weak. GX53 with 60 SMD LEDs have 3 watts and produce about 220 lumens. They cost around 10 euros, so they should be quite bright. I haven’t tested them myself yet, but GU10 with 3.6 watts and 36 SMD LEDs are really very bright, and after 1 year I haven’t had any failures so far.

Hello Herbert!

You are correct, GX53 is a standardized bulb base/fixture type. The 53 refers to the contact spacing, which is 53mm (2 inches). These are relatively large bulbs with an overall diameter of about 75mm (3 inches), and a recessed ceiling spotlight typically measures around 85mm (3.3 inches) in diameter. They are ideal for anyone who finds an MR16 too small. Another difference is that there are no halogen bulbs available for this type—only GU10 or LED.

The GX5.3 designation no longer exists under that name; it is now called GU5.3. Here, the number also refers to the contact spacing, which is 5.3mm (0.2 inches).

Stefanlein

Thank you for your reply. This raises two more questions:

1. What is EGS? I couldn't find any information on it even after searching online.
2. Would it be “safer” to work with MR16? If someone ends up not liking the LEDs, there would be a large hole in the ceiling. With MR16, could you then use halogen as an alternative? Am I understanding this correctly?

Thanks and regards,
Herbert

Sorry, I made a typo: it should have been EGL, meaning energy-saving lamp.

Now regarding the installation size, you’re absolutely right. If you already have a hole for a GX53, it will be complicated to make it smaller again. 🙄
Alternatively, you can first hang the fixture temporarily on the ceiling without a hole and check the lighting.

For MR16 spots, there is also the GU10 alternative. They are similar in size and you don’t need a transformer like with MR16.
If you want to use a transformer, please keep the transformer’s power rating in mind. Many transformers have a minimum load that must not be undercut. For example, if you have a halogen system with 3 x 30 watts and operate it “as intended” with a 100 W transformer that might require at least 10 watts minimum load, you will run into trouble when switching to 3 x 3 watt LEDs. On the other hand, upgrading again with a small LED transformer costs money.
So be careful when buying a transformer, or just use GU10 with mains voltage.
