Hello,
Our plot faces directly south, and we are planning an open kitchen.
Would it make more sense to orient the kitchen towards the east and the living room towards the west with access to the terrace? Since we are also planning a garage on the west side, which will have an overhang of about 2-3m (6.5-10 feet) over the house, I am a bit concerned that the living room might be too shaded during the day. What do you think?

What exactly is the question now?
Where do you need shade or sunlight during the day?
Some avoid it, others seek it! And some are not home during the day at all.
Personally, I generally like it this way: a short path from the entrance straight to the kitchen, where I spend most of my time and want sunlight, with access from the kitchen to the terrace.
From my own experience: it’s better to avoid direct sunlight on the pantry in the kitchen, as it can quickly lead to mold and pests.
Therefore, consider everything in context when planning! Also take a look at the neighboring buildings—any well-intended planning regarding sunlight orientation can be ruined by the neighbor’s house.

Good answer. It really always depends on the individual situation.
We have a double patio door in our kitchen facing south and west.
In the mornings, no one is home for long, but we want sunlight in the kitchen and living area in the afternoon and evening. We only have a roof window facing east.
Cheers, torsan
