Hello

We are remodeling a house. The living, kitchen, and dining area will be on the first floor, with the bedrooms on the ground floor. The ground floor also has a garden with seating areas, a table, a fire pit, and so on. However, since we will be living on the upper floor, we want to have an easy way to go outside for everyday use, like having dinner or sitting outside a bit during the week. This terrace would be 4 x 4.5 meters (13 x 15 feet) in size. We want to put a table on it (about 1.8 meters / 6 feet), a grill, and if possible a small sofa or something similar, nothing large. On weekends or when guests are visiting, we would probably spend more time in the garden (at least in theory), but during the week we would like to be close to the kitchen.

What do you think, is this size sufficient? Will everything fit? Does anyone have a similar terrace and can share how it feels?

Too small. Why the upper floor? Usually, this is done on the ground floor where you have garden space and no hassle.

The upper floor quickly becomes a no-man’s land.

Friends of ours have a similar setup: a hillside house with living spaces on the ground floor and bedrooms in the basement. Next to the kitchen and dining area, there is a balcony with stairs leading down to the garden. Upstairs, there are lounge furniture pieces where you can also eat and relax comfortably. That’s how I would do it too. So, no dining table, just a sofa with a small table :-)

Mark out the area in the garden to see what fits and if there is enough room for movement.

Basically, there’s a good reason why bedrooms are usually located upstairs.

I sleep very poorly downstairs. Maybe you should try sleeping both downstairs and upstairs as a test. I will never sleep downstairs again, not even on the sofa in the living room.

I currently have a terrace measuring 6 x 2.80m (20 x 9 feet). However, I plan to renovate and enlarge it this year to 7 x 3.50m (23 x 11.5 feet). Every centimeter (inch) counts. I have a large table about 1 x 3m (3.3 x 10 feet) with benches around it. When we have guests, space becomes quite tight.

Almost all our activities take place on the terrace — in summer of course — because it is located right in front of the kitchen, which is very convenient. My neighbor has a terrace at the back of the house and has to run down to the basement from the kitchen and then back up a stairway to the rear exit. All for every single plate! It will probably be the same for you if your kitchen is on the upper floor. Everything has to go through the house.

We will probably build it very similarly to yours because of the slope, with a balcony about the same size attached to the kitchen.
My current kitchen is just 3x5 m (10x16.5 ft), and it has a 1.80 m (6 ft) table with a corner bench, plus a kitchen unit and an additional cabinet... so it should also work on a terrace with the right furniture.
You’re planning an 18 m² (194 ft²) terrace, and there’s still going to be a second one.

Just try measuring out 18 m² (194 ft²) in your living room (if it’s even that big right now 😉 ) and use string to lay out the furniture dimensions.

Nice topic, I also need to decide tomorrow on the terrace dimensions.
The building permit / planning permission listed 7 x 3.5 m (23 x 11.5 ft), but now that the garden area there has been cleared of plants, I’m definitely leaning toward making it larger (deeper).

I would make the terrace at least 4 m (13 ft) deep, or 4.5 m (15 ft) if space allows.
As I mentioned before, it gets tight quickly if the chairs aren’t right at the edge, there’s a wider table in between, and you don’t want the foot traffic to interfere.
