Hello everyone, I’m considering using an IKEA Kallax shelf as a basement storage unit. I have a question about how well the Kallax furniture handles moisture. My basement is not damp, but there is often higher humidity, especially in winter. I’m particularly interested in whether the shelf warps, becomes infested with wood-boring insects, or if the panels absorb moisture. Has anyone had experience with Kallax being used long-term in a basement without additional protective measures? I would prefer not to have to treat or replace the shelf every year. Thanks in advance for any helpful insights!

Kallax does not withstand moisture. In a basement, I would recommend a metal or plastic shelving unit instead.

The Kallax shelf is made of particleboard with a melamine coating, which is somewhat moisture-resistant but not designed for high humidity or direct contact with water. In basements, fluctuations in temperature and humidity can cause swelling and warping. It is advisable to consider additional protective measures, such as a water-repellent sealant or continuous sealing, if it is intended to remain in the basement permanently.

Can you specify exactly how much humidity is acceptable for Kallax to remain stable? My basement usually has around 60-70% relative humidity. Is that already enough to risk damage, or is it rather uncritical? Are there any long-term experiences?

I wouldn’t see it as that black and white. The shelf is cheap and sturdy enough for dry indoor spaces, but in a basement? I would consider it quite negligent to place it there without protection.

That is definitely problematic for wood-based materials. Sustained humidity above 60% over months can actually cause swelling. Ignoring this will likely result in a damp shelf or at least stress within the panels in the long run. If you really want to use that shelf in the basement, it’s better to choose something else from the start.

For your situation with 60-70 percent humidity in the basement, I would not recommend Kallax. The wood swells and warps quickly. Shelves made of metal or plastic are better. Alternatively, you can impregnate the Kallax, but that requires additional effort.
