Hello everyone,

I recently stored a KALLAX cabinet in our attic, where we want to keep various items. Unfortunately, we now have a problem with mice apparently getting inside the cabinet and causing some damage. The doors and compartments are closed, but that doesn’t seem to be enough to stop the rodents from finding their way in.

Has anyone had experience with protecting a KALLAX cabinet from mice in an attic? Are there any practical measures or special devices that help without having to fully wrap or seal the cabinet again?

I would appreciate constructive and proven advice, including assessments of the pros and cons of different protection methods. Thanks in advance!

Basically, mice are excellent climbers and can chew through various materials. A KALLAX made of particleboard is therefore unfortunately not very durable against rodents.

As practical protective measures, I recommend:

1. Placing the unit slightly elevated so it doesn’t have direct contact with the floor or walls.

2. Sealing entry points in the attic with sealing material to prevent mice from getting inside.

3. Wrapping mouse deterrent mats or metal mesh around the unit, especially on the sides and back panels.

4. Using plastic boxes or airtight containers in the compartments as additional protection, if possible.

5. As a last resort, placing traps (mechanical or electronic) strategically around the room.

Avoiding complete sealing is understandable, but simple barriers significantly increase protection.

The situation with mice in the attic, especially around furniture like the KALLAX, is not uncommon.

For evaluation:

- Simple shielding with metal mesh (e.g., fine wire mesh) can be effective but requires proper mounting to avoid gaps. Installation may affect the appearance of the furniture.

- Tightly sealed plastic boxes or storage containers offer maximum protection but have logistical drawbacks: the volume increases, and accessibility is limited. Additionally, some items in the shelves can be bulky.

- Scents and natural repellents (e.g., mint, peppermint oil) sometimes work as deterrents but are rarely effective over the long term.

- Electronic devices or ultrasonic repellent systems are technically interesting; however, their effectiveness is scientifically debated.

A practical solution could be to place the cabinet on special feet to create a gap from the floor, combined with regular inspections and thorough sealing of entry points in the attic. An advantage of this approach is that the furniture itself does not need to be repainted or modified.

Could you describe how the attic is currently constructed? Are there any visible holes or entry points for the rodents?

Good question! The attic is partially insulated and partially lined with regular boards. There are some small gaps and cracks, especially where the beams meet, which are supposed to be sealed with insulating wool. Directly next to the KALLAX, I haven’t seen any large visible openings, but it’s possible that small pathways could open up along the walls and floor.

Also, the KALLAX is currently placed directly on the floor, which is probably not ideal if the mice are moving along the walls or floor.

Should I perhaps consider sealing the attic more thoroughly first, before making any changes to the KALLAX?

I’m also open to ideas on how to effectively block off these areas without limiting the storage space.

Definitely! 🌟 Once mice have access routes, it’s like an “all-you-can-eat buffet” – securing just the table won’t help much. ;-)

Sealing the attic is really the foundation. Fill gaps with specialized construction foam or sealing strips where possible.

Then, maybe raise the KALLAX a few centimeters (inches) – small wooden blocks or four stylish feet underneath – this makes it a bit harder for mice to reach. And what has proven very effective: adding lightweight airtight plastic boxes inside the compartments. They’re less bulky than large containers and you don’t lose any overview.

And hey, the KALLAX looks cooler too when it’s a bit “spruced up” and securely positioned! 😉

This way, you combine security and style – which benefits both your storage and you at the same time!

In short and clear: attach feet, seal everything properly, then put good plastic containers inside. That is usually enough.
