Hello everyone,

I recently noticed that the shelf depths of the new Kallax models no longer completely match the previous standard dimensions. In particular, I get the impression that the depth of the shelves in versions from around 2018 onwards differs slightly, which makes fitting standard Kallax inserts or matching boxes more difficult. Therefore, my question is: has anyone here already had experience with the apparently changed shelf depths of the newer Kallax models? How significant are the deviations really, and are there any tips on how to deal with these new measurements when using existing inserts or accessories? I would like to avoid running into problems later due to a lack of planning. Thanks a lot for your feedback!

I measured my new Kallax 2018 model, and the depth is actually slightly less than in older versions. If you definitely want to use accessories, it’s best to measure in advance. There are small differences, but nothing significant.

Hello bodil37,

I can confirm your observation. Ikea has reduced the depth of the newer Kallax shelves from about 39.5 cm (15.5 inches) to approximately 38 cm (15 inches). This can cause issues with inserts that were designed to fit the older dimensions exactly.

My advice:

1. Measure before buying: It’s best to measure the inside dimensions of your shelf using a caliper or at least a good tape measure.

2. For existing inserts: Check if small adjustments are possible; often, light sanding or trimming is enough.

3. Alternative solutions: You can also look for accessories from other manufacturers that might be a bit more flexible in sizing.

It’s a small change, but it can pose challenges for some users. For me, careful measuring and selecting the right inserts made all the difference.

I’ve been thinking about this topic for a while since I’m planning several storage combos with inserts for my living room.

Thanks for the measurements, they’re really helpful! I understand that Ikea makes these small adjustments, but it’s really frustrating when you only realize after assembly that the inserts don’t fit properly 🙁

Does anyone know if the width has changed as well? I’ve heard different things, which makes me a bit uncertain. Hopefully, this issue will be communicated more clearly soon so no one gets unpleasant surprises.

Hello bodil37 and everyone,

As an addition, I would like to explain why there have been variations in the depth of Kallax shelves: Ikea occasionally adjusts their production processes, both for cost reasons and to optimize material use. This sometimes results in minor changes in dimensions, which are considered acceptable within production tolerances.

Regarding the specific measurements:
Previously, the shelf depth was around 39.5 cm (approximately 42 cm (17 inches) overall external measurement), while newer models are often only 38 cm (15 inches) deep. The width usually remains the same, at just under 77.5 cm (30.5 inches) external measurement per compartment.

What does this mean for accessories? Inserts and boxes previously made sometimes fit more tightly or only with slight clearance. For precise fitting solutions, it is recommended either to modify the inserts or to check current information with the accessory manufacturer.

Finally, my advice: Be sure to measure everything carefully before purchasing, and if necessary, ask the seller or Ikea directly whether the model really meets your sizing requirements. This helps avoid unnecessary trouble.

Best regards!
