Hello everyone,

About six months ago, I bought a KALLAX shelf unit (IKEA) and mainly use it as a bookshelf. In recent weeks, I have noticed that the paint or surface coating is starting to peel off on some of the edges. This is especially noticeable on the outer edges of the shelf doors and the shelves themselves. It looks like the area where the particleboard panels are laminated is starting to come loose or develop cracks.

My question to the community: Has anyone else had similar experiences with KALLAX shelves, particularly regarding the durability of the paint on the edges? I am mainly interested to know if this is a known issue with this model, if it could be related to the quality of the coating, or if it is simply due to normal wear and tear.

Are there any tips for proper care or ways to repair the peeling paint without having to completely sand down the shelf unit?

Thanks in advance for your insights!

Yes, this happens quite often, especially on the edges that are frequently touched. Simply apply a clear varnish or wood lacquer to touch it up, and it will hold again. It is important to remove any loose areas and lightly sand the surface beforehand.

This can actually be caused by several factors. KALLAX shelves are known to be made of laminated particleboard – meaning they are not solid wood but rather a veneer or plastic coating on a particleboard base. Edges in particular can be vulnerable to moisture, temperature changes, and mechanical stress.

The surface coating is usually melamine resin or a similar material, which is quite hard but can become brittle at the edges, especially if they are not adequately protected. Normal wear and tear, as well as minor impacts, can quickly cause chipping.

What is the humidity level in your room? Moisture can cause the particleboard to swell and make the coating more prone to detaching. If possible, you should protect the edges from mechanical damage, for example with edge protectors.

For repair: gently sanding the areas where the lamination has come loose helps remove any loose fibers. After that, I would recommend using a special flexible edge varnish designed for wood, so new cracks don’t form when the material moves. Regular clear varnish is usually too hard and brittle.

I would be interested to know how you use the shelf – is it freestanding, frequently moved, or heavily loaded? This makes a difference in how prone it is to wear.

This question is crucial. Anyone criticizing the material should keep in mind that chipboard with laminate is inherently sensitive to moisture due to its construction.

Just recoating with clear varnish or wood lacquer will fix it.

You can’t say that categorically. It depends on the type of coating used, as composite materials react differently, and the wrong finish may reduce adhesion.

I would recommend first checking whether the edges have already absorbed moisture or if mechanical stress is the cause. This assessment significantly influences the choice of repair method.

It is also questionable whether the manufacturer offers any warranty for this issue or at least a goodwill solution. Does anyone here have clarity on the KALLAX warranty claim for surface chipping?

Furthermore, I would be interested to know if there have been similar complaints with other comparable IKEA products. Perhaps this is a systemic problem with the laminate quality.
