Hello everyone,

I have a question that has been on my mind for a while: is it possible to equip IKEA KALLAX shelf doors with a soft-close system? Specifically, I am interested in retrofitting doors on the KALLAX units or perhaps finding specially designed versions that offer a soft-close feature.

I mainly know the KALLAX range as an open cube shelf, some with doors, but mostly with simple hinges without damping. Since I find the noise and force of the doors slamming to be annoying, I would like to look for a solution here. Does anyone know if IKEA itself offers such doors with soft-close, or if there are compatible damping systems that can be easily installed?

I would appreciate any experiences or tips on possible alternatives!

IKEA does not offer KALLAX doors with soft-close.

A simple solution is to buy special soft-close hinges and replace the old ones. There are several third-party suppliers that provide this accessory. Just make sure the hinges are compatible with KALLAX.

Exactly! That's how I did it too, and the soft close feature is really fantastic! :-)

Sometimes it's definitely worth investing a bit because it makes the furniture much more enjoyable. I can only encourage you to give it a try – especially with KALLAX, installation is not complicated!

I just wanted to quickly mention that soft-close hinges on KALLAX doors are a great idea, but you also need to consider how stable the doors and the shelving unit are overall.

If adjustments are too extensive, the doors might not fit properly anymore, or the shelving unit could be stressed.

It’s a good idea to measure carefully beforehand and check if the new hinges match the thickness of the doors. Otherwise, it can get frustrating quickly. 🙂

This is very important. KALLAX doors are usually about 16 mm (0.6 inches) thick, so when buying soft-close hinges, you should check their compatibility with this thickness.

Additionally, IKEA hinges are often special models (35 mm (1.4 inches) drilling), so it is crucial that the soft-close hinges are suitable for these drillings to ensure proper installation and smooth operation.

Absolutely! 😊 The sound of doors slamming shut is such an unnecessary annoyance – soft-close really makes it much more pleasant.

You could almost say it’s like wellness for your furniture 😉

A little tip: When installing, be patient. Adjusting the hinges can be a bit fiddly, but the result is definitely worth it!
