Hello everyone,

I am currently wondering if anyone has experience with IKEA’s KALLAX shelving units, specifically regarding the sliding doors, and whether these doors tend to push dust underneath the unit. I have noticed that a significantly increased amount of dust regularly accumulates beneath the shelves equipped with the original KALLAX sliding doors, and this dust is quite difficult to clean.

It almost seems like the movement of the doors actually drives the dust underneath the unit, creating an unpleasant layer of dirt that is not simply surface dust and cannot be easily wiped away.
Has anyone noticed the same issue or perhaps have tips on how to prevent or at least reduce it?

I would also like to know if this is a common problem with this furniture system or if it might be a kind of manufacturing defect with the doors. Maybe someone has already found an effective solution, whether through additional sealing strips, cleaning methods, or other measures.

Best regards!

Hello!

I’ve actually experienced this problem as well. KALLAX doors aren’t completely sealed along the tracks, so this can cause that kind of “dust transfer.” Dust tends to be especially active where there are small gaps that act like tiny vacuum cleaners when something moves.

What helped me: I once stuck small self-adhesive foam rubber seals to the inside edges of the sliding tracks. This creates a pretty good seal and mostly keeps the dust out. Obviously, it’s not a professional solution, but hey — for a low cost, it’s a nice improvement in cleanliness 🙂

Alternatively, you might consider oiling the doors or keeping them lightly oiled. Sometimes a light silicone spray helps reduce dust sticking to the doors, which also makes sliding smoother and reduces buildup.

Have you tried that? Best regards!

That’s a useful tip I’d like to add to.

From my experience, the issue is due to the construction of the KALLAX sliding doors. Since there is no continuous seal, tiny particles like dust and fibers can easily pass through the side gaps and joint areas beneath the shelf. Additionally, static electricity, which often occurs on plastic surfaces, attracts dust particles.

A permanent and clean solution, in my opinion, can only be achieved by retrofitting seals or using special brush strips on the rails, which are common in sliding components in furniture construction.

For cleaning, using a vacuum cleaner with a narrow nozzle is recommended to regularly remove dust from hard-to-reach areas, complemented by a damp cloth for final cleaning.

Perhaps IKEA could improve the design in future models to minimize these dust issues from the outset.

Hello,

I agree with the previous comments and would like to add a few practical tips.

First, it’s important to understand how the doors on the KALLAX shelves slide. They run on simple tracks that do not create an airtight seal. With every movement, air—and dust along with it—is drawn in or pushed out, which encourages the dust to shift.

To counteract this, in addition to the seals mentioned, you can also try the following:

- Regularly empty and thoroughly clean the shelves so that dust does not accumulate in the first place.
- Place a dust catcher, such as a mat, under the shelf or attach narrow protective strips.
- If possible, adjust the drawers or doors to fit more snugly and minimize gaps.

If anyone has special cleaning products or methods, such as electrostatic dust cloths or nano-coatings on the doors, those would be interesting suggestions.

I hope this helps!
