Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Kallax shelving unit from IKEA to neatly store my energetic dog’s toys. Now I’m considering whether it makes sense to also use Kallax doors to better organize the toys—especially regarding durability and sturdiness.

My main question is: How durable are the Kallax doors when used as a storage solution for dog toys? Are there any experiences with how well the doors hold up to frequent opening and closing, as well as occasional pulling or chewing by dogs?

If there are differences between the various door types (e.g., hinged doors vs. sliding doors), I would also appreciate information on that.

Thank you in advance for your feedback!

Kallax doors are fine for indoor use. However, if your dog pulls or scratches at them, they won’t last long. It’s better to use sturdy plastic bins on the shelves, as they are easier to clean and more durable.

Sliding doors on Kallax units are more durable than hinged doors because they don’t have hinges. However, they can come off the track if your dog pulls on them. Neither type is electrically insulated.

Tip: Self-adhesive edge protectors or small metal brackets on the corners can significantly improve durability.

Very good advice! Additionally, it is recommended to ensure proper adjustment of the hinges during door installation and to retighten the screws after a few weeks. This helps to extend the lifespan.

Another option is applying a durable clear varnish to the edges that are particularly vulnerable, to enhance protection against moisture and scratches.

In conclusion: For those who want to use the doors long-term, it is advisable to minimize mechanical stress from dogs and take preventive protective measures.

I have Kallax units with doors in a household with a small dog. So far, there are no significant signs of wear, but this is also because I secured the doors with a latch to prevent the dog from biting or scratching them.

My recommendation: doors can create an aesthetic sense of order but are better suited for calm environments. For more durable use, I would opt for drawers or open compartments.
