Hello everyone, I installed my KALLAX shelf doors after a recent assembly, but I’m facing a problem: the doors cannot be adjusted evenly. Specifically, the gaps between the doors and the shelf frames in front vary significantly – some doors stick slightly, while others hang a bit crooked. Despite multiple attempts to adjust the screws on the hinges, I cannot achieve uniform alignment. My question to anyone with experience with KALLAX doors or similar systems: What are the most common reasons why KALLAX doors cannot be adjusted evenly after installation? Could it be due to the installation process, the frame shape, or maybe the quality of the hinges? I look forward to a detailed discussion and practical advice.

This basically suggests that the base for the doors, meaning the carcass or the drilling for the hinges, is not perfectly flat and square. However, I would also question to what extent you followed the prescribed installation steps exactly during assembly, since even minimal deviations in the alignment of the hinges can lead to such uneven gaps.

Furthermore: Are the doors really perfectly straight? The KALLAX door panels are made from thin material, so slight warping can directly cause uneven spacing.

From my own experience, I also recommend checking whether the screws are not too loose, as any play in the hinge also leads to uneven gaps.

In addition to Genevieve’s points, I would focus on the following:

1. Correct positioning of the hinges: For KALLAX doors, the hinge angle must be precise; otherwise, the doors may slip or hang crookedly.
2. Quality of the hinges: Cheap or bent hinges offer little adjustment. It may be worth replacing them with sturdy metal versions.
3. Installation surface: KALLAX shelves are usually made of particleboard; if this is warped or poorly finished, the doors won’t align properly.

My advice: Before installation, mount the hinges on a flat surface to check their function. This can save time if something doesn’t fit correctly on the shelf.

That is an important point. Additionally, I recommend not just adjusting one screw when setting up the doors, but becoming familiar with the three adjustment options of a typical KALLAX hinge: height adjustment, lateral adjustment, and depth adjustment.

Especially if a door sticks too much or hangs too loosely, you can use these adjustments to fine-tune it. Checking the hinges for any damage before installation is also important.

If the base – meaning the carcass – is not entirely perfect, small washers or thin wooden shims behind the hinges can help compensate for minor irregularities. It is a bit of a DIY workaround but often very effective.

I’m also not a fan of the original hinges on KALLAX doors—they often feel a bit flimsy. Investing a few dollars in better hinges can save a lot of frustration. 🙂

It also helps to be patient and adjust the doors in stages—start with rough alignment, then fine-tune gradually. Keep opening and closing all the doors regularly to quickly notice any annoying rubbing sounds or sticking.

And yes, I know it’s not rocket science, but a bit of attention to detail makes a difference. For those who want perfection, it’s worth checking the entire shelving unit with a spirit level, since an uneven piece of furniture can cause even straight doors to appear warped. 😉
