ᐅ KALLAX back panel delivered too short – replacement will take weeks?

Hello everyone,

I recently ordered a KALLAX shelving unit, but the supplied back panel is unfortunately too short – it doesn’t fit properly and makes the unit feel unstable. I contacted customer service to get a replacement, but the response was that delivering the correct back panel will take several weeks.

My question: Has anyone had a similar experience? How long did your replacement take, and are there better ways to resolve this issue without having to wait so long?

The back panel is clearly too short, making it impossible to assemble the unit securely – it is missing about 15cm (6 inches) in height. I find this frustrating since it’s a standard product and a complete replacement should be provided without such delays. Any tips or experiences would be appreciated.

For communication with IKEA: Document the defect precisely, if possible with photos and the product’s serial number; this increases the chances of faster replacement delivery.

I can only confirm that! I did it once that way, and the replacement really arrived faster.

And don’t get discouraged, Matteoan! No need to panic – the problem is annoying but solvable.

I also believe you can manage with a more stable interim solution. For everyday use, that’s fine. The main thing is that you then have a sturdy piece of furniture you’re happy with 🙂

If you want, keep us updated on how things develop!

Short back panels plus weeks-long waiting times are unfortunately not surprising but rather reflect the way spare parts are handled in the furniture trade.

This is a valid point, but one should not simply accept that such standard parts are not sufficiently stocked. Especially with high-quality or durable furniture, customers expect replacement parts to be available without long delays.

This also concerns customer loyalty and service. If IKEA itself notices that spare parts take weeks to arrive, it could indicate that logistics and inventory management have room for improvement.

Does anyone have specific experiences with how other furniture providers handle this issue? Are there common industry differences?

Matteoan, have you checked whether the back panel might actually be intended for a different KALLAX model? Does it fit in width but only not in height? That could suggest a shipping error.

That’s a good question. It’s quite common for spare parts to be mixed up or stored incorrectly, especially when the parts have similar dimensions.

Even if customer service said the replacement would take weeks, it would be worthwhile to double-check whether the wrong part was intentionally sent or if a different model was originally ordered.

I would suggest measuring the back panel very precisely (height, width, thickness) and comparing these measurements with the official dimensions of the shelf from the IKEA website.

Sometimes there are also different versions due to color or material thickness that can cause confusion.

Regarding the replacement: if customer service insists on a long wait, it might be worth considering a complaint or an exchange to speed up the process.
