ᐅ KALLAX back panel delivered too short – replacement will take weeks?

MatteoanHello everyone,
I recently ordered a KALLAX shelving unit, but the supplied back panel is unfortunately too short – it doesn’t fit properly and makes the unit feel unstable. I contacted customer service to get a replacement, but the response was that delivering the correct back panel will take several weeks.
My question: Has anyone had a similar experience? How long did your replacement take, and are there better ways to resolve this issue without having to wait so long?
The back panel is clearly too short, making it impossible to assemble the unit securely – it is missing about 15cm (6 inches) in height. I find this frustrating since it’s a standard product and a complete replacement should be provided without such delays. Any tips or experiences would be appreciated.

Hi Matteoan,
That’s really frustrating – having issues with a back panel is so annoying! 🙂
I once had a similar problem with another IKEA product where parts arrived incorrect and the replacement took forever. But don’t get discouraged! It often helps to be persistent and follow up, or even visit the IKEA store directly, as sometimes they have replacements in stock there.
In the meantime, you might consider temporarily adding some support at the back until the replacement arrives – something like a pressed MDF board from a hardware store, cut to size, can significantly improve stability.
It’s worth sticking with it – fingers crossed it works out for you soon!!!

The back panel is clearly too short, so you can’t safely assemble the shelf – it is missing about 15cm (6 inches) in height. This is a crucial point because back panels—especially for KALLAX shelves—usually serve a structural purpose.
What are the exact measurements? Standard KALLAX back panels are typically 77 cm (30 inches) high for the 4x4 models. If the back panel is really about 15 cm (6 inches) too short, it might be a wrong delivery or a manufacturing defect.
When ordering a replacement, it’s common for the correct back panel to take several weeks to arrive. IKEA may not produce or stock the back panels separately, or they might prioritize large warehouse customers when supplies are limited.
I would recommend informing customer service about how critical this component is for the stability of the unit; this might speed up the process.
Alternatively, you could check if it’s possible to have a wooden board cut to the appropriate thickness (usually 3–5 mm (0.1–0.2 inches)) at a hardware store, to temporarily ensure stability until your replacement arrives.
Can you say whether you have already fully assembled the shelf or if you are still in the process of building it? This can be important because the missing back panel mainly affects stability during assembly.

Sometimes they have replacements in stock faster there. You need to be careful with that! Especially at IKEA, many stores usually don’t keep backing panels in stock as spare parts because their inventory, particularly for thin components, is strictly managed based on sales figures and availability.
From numerous reports, it seems that it is more common than not at IKEA for spare parts to be unavailable immediately. This is partly because backing panels are seen as relatively ‘simple’ components, and many customers make the mistake of either leaving them out during assembly or replacing them with their own solutions — which IKEA apparently treats as a customer service issue.
A short backing panel plus weeks-long waiting time is therefore unfortunately not surprising but reflects how spare parts are generally handled in the furniture retail sector.
One could almost think that IKEA simplifies things for themselves and their customers by keeping inventory very limited. Whether this is a good approach or not is up to each individual to decide.
From a technical standpoint, the back panel of the KALLAX is not just decorative; it significantly contributes to the torsional rigidity, especially for freestanding shelves without wall mounting.
If the back panel is 15cm (6 inches) too short, this clearly indicates a defect. When contacting customer service, it is advisable to mention the safety and stability of the furniture to hopefully prioritize the issue.
Unreliable claims like “replacement parts take weeks” are unacceptable, so:
- Check if the shelf can be safely secured without the back panel using additional brackets or metal braces.
- In some cases, simple plywood panels from a hardware store may also be suitable.
- For communication with IKEA: Document the defect thoroughly, if possible with photos and the product’s serial number; this improves the chances of a faster replacement shipment.
While this is not an ideal solution, it at least provides temporary stabilization.

Hello Matteoan,
I completely understand your issue. Getting spare parts from large furniture manufacturers like IKEA can sometimes take a long time, especially when it involves components that are rarely replaced.
You mentioned that the back panel is about 15cm (6 inches) too short – that’s not a minor defect, and it significantly affects the stability.
I would recommend, if the replacement takes too long, to definitely work with a temporary solution as already mentioned here – for example, having an MDF board cut to size at a hardware store.
If you have some DIY skills, you can quickly screw the board to the back or fix it with brackets to ensure stability. This temporary solution is also more reliable than just using a provisional foam board or something similar.
Regarding customer service: definitely stay persistent, preferably by email with written confirmation, so you have proof that you requested a replacement within the expected timeframe. This also improves the chances of receiving a replacement or even goodwill compensation.
If you haven’t assembled the shelf yet, I would definitely wait until the correct back panel arrives or until you have a secure alternative solution.
